Miracle Grow for Guitar
This is one of the BEST foundational lead guitar books ever written (and backed by CD). It is a perfect mix between technical and practical. Instead of just a bunch of ugly sounding scales or exercizes, the examples they use to teach techniques sound great (real music!) and can be added to your lick library right away. They also pick a lot of examples that sound good both slow AND fast, so they inspire while you grow into the lick's "proper" speed (many awesome licks out there ONLY sound good fast...)The book starts off with tiny lead licks and eventually works it's way to typical full length Solos like you would find in "radio" songs (4-8 measures) Unlike other books that just present the lick for you to memorize (without true understanding), this book not only breaks down the physical aspects that make the technique successful\optimal, but it also covers a LOT of theory as to why\when this lick is musically appropriate - expanding your understanding of music overall. BUT if you want to skip the theory, you also have the option to just jump to the next exercize - the book is INCREDIBLY well structured! A GREAT tool! The CD itself is EPIC. There are around 90 tracks on it! The examples are typically played slow (half-time) then the next track is fast (real-life speed), the advanced solos at the end also feature a "Jam Track" which is the band without the lead so you can play the solo you just learned in a "Real Life" context (with all the backing and support of the rythmn section WITHOUT having the false support of playing the Solo on top of another guy playing the solo)Although it says "Rock" Lead, the book has at least 10 examples that I think of as "Country" (very Major, very "Fender-twangy"and although the other 80 tracks on the CD (YES! It comes with THAT many examples) are presented with a Rock-Distortion tone, if you just change your tone (shut off the distortion, swap the Ibanez for a Fender) they are immediately applicable to Country or any other genre. In Summary: This book will grow your guitar skill like Miracle Grow! This is a SUPER value. Tons of technique, Tons of great licks\solos. I wish they would write more!!! :) 5 stars *****What Next? - There are also 2 other books "in this series" (no series name, just search on Nick Nolan + Danny Gil) that continue in more advanced levels. Although, in my opinion, the other 2 don't have many immediately usable licks\solos so aren't very good for building your lick library - instead they focus almost purely on building your technical facility and your knowledge of theory and how to apply musical lines at the right place (i.e. use scales\modes\pentatonics over the right chords)Although they don't feature many usable licks, if you are looking to truly understand music, these 2 are equally as EPIC as the first. (You will actually understand what the heck a D Mixolidian finally means!)Best of Luck on your journey! Remember: Slow and Steady wins the race! (speed comes from hundreds of slow\clean repetitions - not from sloppy rushing\pushing) ;)

Wonderful book for teaching new guitar students that is not ...
Wonderful book for teaching new guitar students that is not boring. Right in the first few pages, there are simple riffs that are easily comprehended by students and make them sound cool! Gives great student confidence and gratification! Arrangements laid out with some excellent examples that Mr. Gill has, to help with accuracy, maintaining timing and alternate picking all in one. This is a go to book for me when a student wants to learn lead without the theory or boring rhetoric. Wish this book had been around when I was 12 and learning the guitar! I even use some of the runs out of the book to warm up with!! Excellent for student retention!

Great book for my class
My guitar teacher recommended this book for me. I've been using it in class and to study by for the last 2 months I think. I'm a beginner-intermediate player. It's an excellent book with challenging material that sounds good so I feel like I'm making solid progress. I've bought a lot of books in the past and frankly most of them aren't really helpful to me. This book is the best of them all so far.

Just great, a mid leave practice book, a great transition from a beginner level.

No theory, no length...no thanks! Use YouTube for licks instead
If you are looking for a book which gives you the building blocks to write your own lead lines or improve your improvisation skills...look elsewhere. This book won't teach you much beyond the basic forms for the major and minor pentatonic scales, and even those not in a very clear or practical manner.Short on theory (and everything else, with a disappointing 25 pages or so of actual material), the book takes a "monkey see, monkey do" approach which will have you sounding great on the rather generic licks provided, but with no idea where to go from there. It would be much more cost effective to research the pentatonic scale patterns online (where they will be presented more logically and usefully) and check YouTube if all you want to do is pick up a few rock licks. One pro is that the examples and accompanying backing tracks are better than average, but the book is just so short with so few examples that it doesn't make up for much. Really poor value considering you could get all three volumes and 424 pages of William Leavitt's Modern Method for Guitar, four volumes and 320 pages of Jody Fischer's Jazz Guitar - Complete Edition, or 208 pages of Keith Wyatt's Blues Guitar Soloing for about the same price.I've seen reviews suggesting the rest of Mr. Gill's Rock Lead series gets better, but it seems to me that he's broken what should have been one full book into three bite-sized books, charging full price for each meager bite. Unfortunately, this appetizer left a terrible taste in my mouth, and I won't be coming back for more.In short, Mr. Gill is a fine guitarist, a poor teacher, and a terrible businessman. Avoid.

Schöne Übungen, aufgeteilt in Übungshäppchen, gute Begleit-CD.
