Utterly, utterly charming
I'm a sucker for pretty endpapers. A great start. As someone who knows Edinburgh well, I was delighted to see many places to recognise: the Vennel and Heriot's School, the Grassmarket, for example. But the period detail only gives a flavour - the characters are vibrant, fresh and relatable for a modern audience. Teaming the cutest of puppies with an orphan boy who gets taken in as a result of the dog's heroism is a bit of a storytelling masterstroke - and sure to be a winner with kids. The book stops well short of John Gray's death and Bobby's vigil at Greyfriars. A handy info page at the back offers us what we know about the real Bobby, but this book stands alone as an uplifting, cute story of a dog and his boy. And, of course, a story of Edinburgh, which for me is every bit as compelling a hero as the two!
