III. Germanic SS Panzer-Korps. The History of Himmler's Favourite SS Panzer-Korps, 1943-1945: Volume 1 - Creation - September 1944

Having read my copy of III. Germanic SS Panzer-Korps. The History of Himmler's Favourite SS Panzer-Korps, 1943-1945: Volume 1, I have to express my admiration for the thorough job that the authors have done in putting this excellent book together. Part unit history, part operational history, part biographical study, and social history, the authors have assembled a wealth of material - personal correspondence, official records, eyewitness accounts, and photographs - that trace the rise and operations of the only "International" panzer corps of the Waffen-SS, composed of volunteers from at least 11 European nations. Volume I traces its history from its inception in the fall of 1943 and up to the fighting in the spring of 1944. Led by the energetic and charismatic Felix Steiner, this corps embodied the idealistic spirit of the forward-thinking Waffen-SS leaders who saw it as a model of future Pan-European cooperation, albeit within the framework of the Third Reich. Chock-full of fascinating details, this volume interprets the history of the III. SS-Pz.Korps in a highly original and entertaining fashion. It also pulls no punches, and proves itself to be very critical of the Waffen-SS as a military and social institution. Well-written by three expert military historians, it has earned its place among other works on the Waffen-SS, including Wilhelm Tieke's own "Tragedy of the Faithful." I am looking forward to reading Volume II.

As expected ...lived down to the standards expected of Westberg. ..no respect for the subject despite the handsome presentation

The book is an inaccurate account! Please read "Tragedy of the Faithfull" for a less slanderous account.On a slight positive the layout is nice and the odd new photo.The second volume could have easily been included in this volume.

Den Punktabzug gibt es dafür, dass in den ersten 46 Seiten des Buches lediglich allgemein über die WSS berichtet wurde und erst darauffolgend näheres über das III. SS PzK. Die Autoren haben sehr akribisch recherchiert und viele Zeitzeugen befragt. Der Schwerpunkt liegt mehr bei den skandinavischen Freiwilligen und somit bei der 11. SS-PGD "Nordland" und weniger bei der 4. SS-Panzergrenadierbrigade "Nederland". Dies liegt sicherlich darin begründet, dass die Autoren aus Skandinavien stammen und hier auch die meisten Infos erhalten konnten. Das Bildmaterial ist hervorragend und daher würde ich auch eher 4,5 Sterne vergeben. Sehr gut gefiel mir auch die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den Kriegsverbrechen der Einheit bezogen auf die Partisaneneinsätze 1943/1944 in Kroatien. Sehr deutlich wird auch die politische Einstellung der skandinavischen Freiwilligen herausgearbeitet. Der Verband bestand zum grössten Teil aus Freiwilligen Volksdeutschen aus Rumänien. Der Anteil der europäischen Freiwilligen und Deutschen aus dem sog. 3. Reich war eher gering.
