You have answered your own question. PU stands for Polyurethane. PU Leather covers different methods of fabrication but the most common is a plastic polyurethane coating applied to base made out of fibre (usually polyester).

I would only wipe clean it as I think it may be damaged if you wash it. I have had it for a while and I have only wiped the inside if there has been a spill. It's a great wash bag!

No but the larger size may fit straightening irons
