That Summer in Sicily: A Love Story - A Journey Through Time and Emotion
I recently had the pleasure of reading “That Summer in Sicily: A Love Story” by Marlena de Blasi, and it has been an unforgettable experience. This book is a beautiful blend of history, romance, and personal discovery, all set against the stunning backdrop of Sicily. From the very first page, I was captivated by de Blasi’s lyrical writing style. Her descriptions of Sicily are so vivid and evocative that I felt as though I was walking through the sun-drenched streets and lush landscapes myself. The author’s ability to paint such a detailed and immersive picture of the setting is truly remarkable. The heart of the story lies in the enchanting villa Donnafugata, where de Blasi and her husband, Fernando, find themselves during their travels. It is here that they meet Tosca, the elegant and enigmatic patroness of the villa.Tosca’s life story, which she shares with the author, is nothing short of mesmerizing. Her tale of love, loss, and resilience is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. One of the aspects I loved most about this book is the way it seamlessly weaves together past and present.Tosca’s recounting of her life with the last prince of Sicily is filled with rich historical detail and emotional depth. The narrative effortlessly transitions between her past experiences and the present-day interactions at the villa, creating a tapestry of stories that is both complex and engaging. The characters in this book are wonderfully developed and relatable.Tosca, in particular, is a standout. Her strength, grace, and wisdom shine through in every page, making her a truly unforgettable character. The bond that forms between her and the author is touching and adds an extra layer of warmth to the story.Another highlight of “That Summer in Sicily” is its exploration of Sicilian culture and traditions. The book delves into the intricacies of Sicilian life, from the local cuisine to the customs and rituals that define the region. This cultural immersion adds a rich and authentic flavor to the narrative, making it not just a love story, but also a celebration of Sicily itself. The themes of love and resilience are beautifully portrayed throughout the book.Tosca’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of love and the strength of the human spirit. Her story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope and the possibility of new beginnings. In conclusion, “That Summer in Sicily: A Love Story” is a captivating and deeply moving read.Marlena de Blasi’s masterful storytelling, combined with the enchanting setting and unforgettable characters, makes this book a true gem. It is a story that will stay with me for a long time, and I am grateful to have experienced its magic.

beautiful, heart-wrenching love story
That Summer in Sicily by Marlena di Blasi was an adventureous and gorgeous tale filled with pain and triumph. Told by di Blasi in her descriptive, florid language it was a feast for the senses, as she transports you to a world half a world away, making you see and experience everything with her and Tosca. All the other reviews describe Tosca's and Leo's story accurately, so I will not describe it here. Suffice it to say that its as unbelievable, enchanting and magical as only real life can be. Read it, savor it. Find yourself humbly admiring the strengh of the human spirit. What stands out in this book, however, is not the epic love story between two people but the epic struggle to do what is right.Tosca and Leo walked the walk. In a sense, they paid with their lives for it, reminding us of something we all know but often choose to forget: to whom much is given, much is also expected. In addition, their spirits truely shone through the pages, showing them to be, well, human. As beautiful and intelligent as they both were, they weren't perfect. And thats the beauty of this story--that you don't need perfection to do what is right or lead a life worthy of praise.Marlena, this book has made me want to visit Sicily and look up Tosca just to be in her powerful presence. I thank-you and Tosca for sharing this inspiring story.

Exquisite, luscious, and lyrical
Every word a jewel, Marlena de Blasi transports us to another time filled with passions, love, and earthiness too, in the sense of appreciation for the richness of nature and the power and draw of the land. The weaving of past and present and the gorgeous imagery makes reading this beautiful book a deep pleasure.

Almost a fairy tale
An interesting read indeed. It was almost a fairy tale. I loved her decriptions, but there was so much mystery and intrique that it seemed unreal, but then the Italians do have a penchant for drama....having spent some time in Italy, I speak from personal experience. It is heartwarming to know that a place like that exists in Sicily given the influence of the Mafia. We all could take a lesson from the Prince and Tosca. Marlena DeBlasi is a great writer and a true romantic, however, her husband's role in their stay is never clear. I felt like there was another story that wasn't told.

Dreamy, mysterious, otherworldly and wonderful
I listened to the audio book presentation of this book first, and I loved it so much that I had to buy the book for my library, where I work. (We already owned the audio). The story starts off as a mere misbegotten travel story as Marlena de Blasi and her husband wander around Sicily trying to get people to talk to them. It isn't until she is directed to possible lodgings at a villa owned by a woman named Tosca that she falls under the spell of Sicily as she and her husband linger on at the villa. She finally is trusted by Tosca who slowly and most beautifully recounts her very amazing life and love story. This story is all the more entrancing because it is a true story, and an incredible story of pain, and learning and love. The audio was one of the best I have ever listened to. This is really a book worth reading. It is magical.

A good read
Parts of this book were a little slow but the ending more than made up for it. Marlena de Blasi has a way of describing things that makes you feel you are sitting in the middle of the story listening to her tell it and I like that. I felt like at times I could smell the baking bread, see the feasts that were set out, feel Tosca's pain and happiness. I did not expect the ending and was overjoyed when I read it, not that I will divulge the secret, you will have to read it and no, don't start at the back of the book!!!! Overall, a really good book that I very much enjoyed.

An exceptional true love story
Marlena di Blasi is an exceptional story writer. Added to that her understanding of the human condition, Italian culture and an enquiring nature makes for one of the best stories I have ever read. I would recommend that you read her 3 books first - 1000 days in venice, 1000 days in Tuscany and A lady in the Palazzo - then this sublime story will come into its own. If you ever wondered about the mysteries of Sicily, and you love an excellent read, this is the book for you. If you want to read a philosopher's view of Sicilian culture in a very entertaining and readable way, this is the book for you. If you love the whole sensuous nature of wonderful Sicilian food, this is the book for you. The quality of the writing deserves awards, high sales etc, but if Mrs di Blasi wants to continue her wonderful life in italy, relatively little known, perhaps just a select few amazon readers is enough.

Still reading it
Having just got back from a holiday in Sicily, I started reading this to keep me in the island. An interesting read that is taking me around the island again and whilst it is classed as a love story, it is not the usual romantic easy read. I am enjoying it.

Mysterious & Very Hard To Put Down
I found it a little harder to "get into" this book - another excellent book by the marvellous writer Marlena De Blasi - but DO PERSEVERE, as it is very worthwhile. Continuing the story of her life with the lovely Fernando, but this time, creating an aura of mystery, which slowly unravels a strange but beautiful & unusual love story in Sicily, set around an old Convent. Somewhat different to previous trilogy, but nonetheless utterly absorbing. Altogether intriguing, delightfully written (as usual) &, of course, some great Italian recipes, which I loved.Another De Blasi book to keep & re-read time & again.Definitely recommended, but read the other 3 first, so that you "get to know" Marlena & Fernando a little bit, first.
