Rising Stars Compendium

This was probably the inspiration for NBC's "Heroes"- awesome story.
This compendium containned all the main stories of Straczynski's "Rising Stars" comic book. I really enjoyed the plot of the story. It was a combination of mystery, intrigue, & super hero action. The plot kept me turning the page. When I read the last couple of pages in the story, I couldn't help but hum the chant from the Heroes TV show. As someone who grew up reading Marvel & DC comics, and who remembers when Image Comics 1st came on the scene, this was excellent story telling.

Buyers BEWARE!
This is on the PUBLISHERS of Rising Stars Compendium. Like everyone else has stated, the binding on this book is ATROCIOUS. I currently own four Image Comics Compendiums, and NONE of them have this issue! I chalk it to this (possibly) being their first softcover compendium, and thus they didn’t know how to put together such a thick softcover book. HOWEVER, this is apparently the 2015 RE-ISSUE! I’m sending this back, and hoping that one day we ALL can get a reprinting.

I know what the author attempted... but he failed
I read this almost 20 years ago, forgot all about it . For nostalgia's sake I bought this copy. It does not live up to my teenage memory. It also does not age well in today's climate. The first problem is the issue of race. There are numerous examples in this series that are very ploblematic if not overtly racist. The fact that this Illinois group is 99% white, the ideal woman being an blonde, the cop being the best of the specials etc. There are just so many tiny microagressions that add up. Like yes, there is one black special in a sea of 130 children. One special is by my understanding non binary but the remaining 130 are all straight (and his storyline is a mess). You can tell a lot by seeing how the author centres whiteness in the main characters and crowds... but ensures there is a black face when showing a criminal. Everyone is straight straight STRAIGHT until we need to either show an abused child or a tragic gay. The specials destroy Chicago... and then declare themselves humanity's saviour?! A fully white chicago mind you (with one notable exception). There is a middle east storyline that is also very offensive and very american. Peace in the region is brought about by turning the desert into arable land...the fact that western powers actively created the conflict and sustained it by illegal wars is handwaved. The author should have either ignored the real world in his fantasy comic, or ensured he wasn't promoting his own country's propaganda and insulting other nations simultaneously.I would have given 3 stars but dropped it to 2 because of the quality of the kindle upload. Some pages are missing in the digital copy. It does not stop me from following the story but I was already irritated by everything else.

Great story. Horrible format.
Plots, characters and epic storytelling- all here. My rating is due to the condition of the book. It’s like a reading an ancient tome that might turn to dust in your hands. Horrible format. It’s so heavy that the obviously cheap binding might fall apart. Hopefully I will get at least one good reading before that happens.

Rough
I love comics, and I love Michael J Straczynsky. So I was expecting some genius work here, but I must be honest. I felt like it was written as it was being drawn. The main character is very arrogant and of course is a writer and a huge cliche in so many ways. The “casting” was cringy. All the characters were the same race, which is fine I guess, but they didn’t have distinguishing features to tell them apart. Same face and hair for all the guys. Girls had different color hair but that’s it. I was constantly confusing who’s who. And not just the design of the characters, but the art itself was just very rough in general. Character faces aren’t very expressive, often drawn cross eyed. The relationships between characters were all over the place. Hating each other, then best friends with each other out of nowhere without context. Their powers even changed now and then, just to fit the story at convenience. The female characters were the worst unfortunately, having the worst powers (being the most beautiful woman in the world!?!?) and constantly being da,self in distress, and falling for the main character for absolutely no reason or history of interaction that would make sense. The climax of the book happened toward the middle. Everything added after was not exciting, the stakes were gone. The rest was a very boring drama of the writer’s own philosophies of how he would change the world. That all being said, I love J.MS... and I do appreciate his ideas on changing the world. In a way, this was his statement of how we can make the world a better place by working together. Good ideas in here... and for that I’ll give 2 stars.

good story
story is quite interesting. surprisingly prescient with points very relevant today though written a while ago. HOWEVER, the quality of the book itself is less than zero. Binding so poor, that I ended up with hundreds of loose pages. Keep large elastics handy.
