The great triumph of the human spirit in Dorie shines through!
When everyone around you shows and speaks hatred and instills verbal and physical abuse, what is one to do as a little child who cannot defend herself? Dorie shows that although rejected all her childhood, she could overcome and even find success in and through her talents. But, what about the love she craved? She found it in the only one she knew would never reject her--Jesus. She shows the world through her story that only her trust in her faith helped dig her out of rejection & pain, and into a life full of the love she had needed desperately as a little girl. What completeness is gotten in her life as a young woman, a wife, a mother, and a missionary because of her trust in the one who saved her out of humanity's short-comings. What a triumph!

Beacon of Hope
This book proves there is no hopeless situation! If a child can grow up hated, without even the human love that belongs to us all, and still become a truly forgiving and loving person, then there is no hopeless case. Books like this, that clearly show that GOD’S LOVE penetrates the darkest places and are wonderful for everyone to read! Thank you, Theta Ciriello

Even If My Own Father and Mother Abandon Me, God Himself Will Take Me In
I don't think I have ever read a sadder story and I have read some pretty awful child abuse memoirs. I don't have words to properly describe how this story effected me. It resonated in my soul. The title of my review is my favorite Bible verse, but I had never previously heard of anyone who truly experienced its' meaning, until I read Ms. Van Stone's book. Abandoned by both her parents at an early age, Ms. Van Stone was beaten every single night without fail at the orphanage her and her sister were sent to and later in uncaring foster homes as well as told she was ugly, worthless, and unloved. With no one to turn to she learned to rely only on herself and survive until a chance event introduced her to her heavenly father who would never abandon her even on her darkest days. This is a truly beautiful story of triumph against all odds.

Wonderful testimony
I could not put the book down once I started reading. It was filled with so much detail in so little time that I couldn't help but to continue on reading. This is a great book that exemplifies God's grace and bigger plan for all who believe in his resurrection for our salvation. Anyone questioning how to continue to have faith through trials, this book is a wonderful example of how to praise and honor God always !

God will take our hurts and give us victory.
I heard Dorie VanStone speak and show her slides of her work in the Baliem Valley (New Guinea) in the 1950's. Her book was very interesting and told about the work among the Stone Age people as I had learned from her in then 50's. What I did not know and it was very well made known in the book was that she had accepted Christ as a child and had memorized God's word and the Lord met her needs all the years that she was in foster care, orphan homes and lived with families were she was a maid., etc. What could have been a defeated, discouraging, and depressing life, was instead a life dependent on the comfort that Christ promised in His Word. She had a forgiving heart and a love for others, even those who had neglected and abused her as a child. Because of what she had experienced in her early years, she by the power of the Holy Spirit, had a remarkable understanding of others. Truly, she showed that God's love and grace is sufficient for all. After reading "Dorie," I was blessed again by her remarkable life. Joufully His, Betty Diamond

Awsome story of overcoming a terrible beginning of life and victorious adulthood.
Dorie must be read with her second book No Place to Cry to redeem the full story of her childhood abuses, neglect, and horrific sexual assaults. Yes I said sexual assaults that is not disclosed in the first book. BUT GOD! Her faith in God carried her through all the troubles and sufferings of childhood and made her a responsible loving adult, mother, and wife.

Deeply moving story of God's love for the unloved.
Many like Dorie have grown up feeling unloved by anyone. Dorie had the benefit of meeting God early. Some of us had to face the abuse without that knowledge, but like Dorie, when God becomes real our lives change dramatically! Wonderful story and great read!

Sometimes hard to read what Dorie went through but sweet and encouraging as well. Goes to show how we need to love and care for those in our path whether they are family or not.

Ever been rejected? This is your book!
This book is captivating, raw and tugs at every heartstring you have. Hard to believe it's a true story. This book proves that no matter how broken a person is, God has the power to reach us in our brokenness and radically transform our lives.
