Love the 2nd to last chapter about HOPE
It's cool that they recognize some of the brands/companies that have been started by ex-gallo employees like they do in the 2nd to last chapter. It seems like Gallo has been the starting point for almost all major execs in the alcohol space. Probably one of the more impressive things about the family/company. If you go into Southern Wine and Spirits, Youngs Market, Johnson Bros. or any of the other most respected alcohol distributors in nation you find that the VP's and other higher ups started at Gallo for the most part. Great company with a lasting tradition and first class standard. Enjoyed this read.

Fascinating Story
The author did a good job of telling the fascinating story of the Gallos. If you are interested in wine and winemakers, this is a good book to read.

Flawed, yet interesting
This was interesting, but the author should have limited his story to that of Ernest and Julio and the members of the family during that generation. That part of the story is fascinating and THAT is worth the read. But as soon as he decided to dedicate pages to the current Gallos, and portray them as doing anything other than continuing their forefathers' perpetual revolutionizing of the art of pumping nasty inexpensive alcohol into the market for alcoholics, teenagers, and college students, well... his credibility was reduced to zero. I understand the current Gallo in charge, Gina Gallo, is attractive, but the author reminds us at least 4 times. And so what if she's not the jerk Ernest or Julio was. The Gallo Wine Company is a perfect representation of almost everything that is wrong with companies that are hell-bent on monopolizing a product market. The author had no problem slamming the founders for their misdeeds, but completely let the current regime off the hook...I can only assume, based on what he wrote, because he thinks Gina Gallo is really pretty.

This is the third book on the Gallo's that I have read. The author makes some charges that the other books hint at. Basically it points out the corruption the Gallo's practiced. I find it to be a good historical read of the prohibition era and the quest to be the largest wine producer in the US. I find the contradiction that Gallo liked the profits from Thunderbird but didn't necessarily like its name associated with the product to be humorous. Bottom line big business like to crush the small guys, at any cost.

Mafia wine connections of San Joaquin
Excellent insight into California wine industry and how the Gallo Brand came to be from its roots in the Mafia. The obsessive, compulsive nature and sometimes lack of love for family is a real eye opener. Ernest and Joe Sr were driven at the expense of family, and most importantly their younger brothers.
