Abbot vs Prodigy
First thing I did was compare this with the Abbot FreeStyle Lite. The readings were within a point or two of each other. The Abbot takes 5 seconds for a reading, the Prodigy 6 seconds. The Prodigy does not need coded unless it seems to be inaccurate. The Abbot should be coded with every new box of test strips. (It says "no coding" but the advice is to code with every new box. Which is why they include coding solution with their meter.)The Abbot takes .03 microliters, while the Prodigy takes .07 microliters. The microliter is a very small measurement but the difference between the two is the difference between seeing blood (Abbot) and a drop of blood (Prodigy)... that is significant. BECAUSE with repeat sticking, it gets harder to get blood.Size wise, they are about the same size. The Prodigy is oblong while the Abbot is more or less round. Other Prodigy meters are rounder as well. The battery might be a problem. Other Prodigy meters take regular batteries. This one takes a "button" type. The way the battery connects is much more fragile than a standard AAA battery. That means it's MUCH more vulnerable to drops and mishandling. So durability and blood sample the Abbot easily wins. Accuracy seems to be similar. Ease of maintenance, edge to the Prodigy. Here is why "I love it." (5 stars). Rather than the dollar a test strip, these are a dime per test strip. (Based on Amazon prices/suppliers).So cost wise the Prodigy is a HUGE winner. Also unlike other brands, a Prodigy test strip fits ALL their meters. (Abbot has different test strips for different meters... making it more difficult to ensure correct ordering... or the sharing of test strips with other users if necessary.)My big complaint is this has a USB port that can be hooked to computer, but unless one is running Window's Vista (or 7) then there is no program available for reading the meter.

Software doesn't work and they know it.
Advertised software for tracking glucose levels and digitally transferring it has not worked for years with any supported version of Windows. The software company I reached washed their hands of the problem saying "we were payed years ago to develop a Windows solution and have not been hired to update it. Be aware you will be using pencil and paper than keying it into your spreadsheet. And don't forget to scan those records and than email them to your doctor. Perhaps you can go to a copier and than snail mail your data to your doctors office. UGH get another meter.

Disappointed
I bought this monster because I wanted a backup and something smaller than my official meter to be more convenient to carry. I guess I should have researched more. The price of the strips is great and since I would be paying out of pocket, I ordered the meter and strips. Everything arrived in good shape and a timely fashion. The meter itself is easy to set up and was ready to go very quickly. Unfortunately, there are apparently no industry standards when it comes to meters. Everything I received was well within the expiration date, but every time I tested, it was 20 points higher than my ins approved meter. I did contact the maker and all they said was I need to check with test solution ( which does not come with the meter), and their representatives would be happy to talk me through the process. So I'm supposed to spend more money just to verify that the meter is inaccurate. With no way to adjust calibration, how does that help? Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you. $26 down the drain. For someone on insulin, accuracy is a must.

VERY "POOR" PRODUCT DESIGN!
I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. I GIVE IT 3 STARS. I Have successfully used this Glucose Meter for 4 months in exactly how and why I bought it. As my CAR device. However, the need to change the battery and redo the "setups" is very "POOR." The Set Button is located in the Battery Compartment. Today I changed the Battery but when trying to re-set date, time etc, the Battery keeps falling out! I quit, I'll still use the Meter as my car device without caring about the other information.

Batteries are more expensive than strips!! and cannot be returned
Cheapest test strips around and as often as I test that is a big PLUS... after I got it I've learned that it reads 10 to 15 points higher than my OneTouch meter which has been often compared to my doctor's. This is a MINUS, but one I can live with, I just subtract 12 points when putting into the tracking program on my phone... accurate enough for my needs. Now i have had the meter for a week and put in Three batteries!! it is like the meter never shuts off after the battery is inserted. this is a huge FAIL! it is hard enough to buy a meter and strips, much less batteries twice a week. What do you do with this piece of crap? It is useless as a door stop and according to the seller CAN NOT be returned.

Sending back and reordered in hopes of getting a good one. Technology is great but ONLY when it ...
Received item timely. 2 days after I started using it started shutting down in the middle of testing, no low battery indication, thus wasting strips. Did this randomly at least once a day. Sending back and reordered in hopes of getting a good one. Technology is great but ONLY when it works.

Defective
This is the 2nd one I have bought...this one must be defective. The first lasted and worked fine. This 2nd one goes through batteries every month. If this was my first purchase...I would think it was just bad design...but with this one ..I think it is just defective. Don't think I can send back.
