Q: are these mercury operated? on when hood opens/ off when hood closes?

Gravity activated. On with hood open, off when it's closed.

Q: Can someone direct me to a correct pair of led bulbs for this lamp? thanks in advance!

You need to use so-called "rigid loop 561 LED bulbs" - but the issue with these, due to the holder (and the fact that it was designed for non-LED bulbs) is that the loop makes the LED shine toward the "side" and not "out" (facing the lens). If you have the skills and tools, you can desolder the loops and attach new loops with a "twist" to make the PCB the LEDs are attached to orient correctly (a new longer wire is needed, because the twist will "shrink" the length - using the existing loop may not allow you to connect it to the holder - experiment). I managed to get mine to work, though - you can too.

This is a Dodge/Chrysler OEM underwood light. Will not fit suburban

No it will not work in a 1988 Cherokee
