Wonderful treat for the space cadet in your life.
Exactly as I remember from Space Camp. My wife wanted some space ice cream and this is exactly how both of us remember it. For those who are not familiar, the product comes 'fractured' into chunks; it is not meant to come in a single large bar or block of freeze-dried ice cream. The flavors accurately resemble those of the famous Neapolitan ice cream flavor. There is no wrong way to eat space ice cream, but a way I enjoy eating this product is to suck on it until it starts to dissolve. It will loose retention very quickly and turns into a creamy treat in your mouth. Think of it as a "melts in your mouth, not in your hand" experience. The packaging looks identical to what I remember being offered in the Cape Kennedy gift shop. It is thick and has a "high speed", "spacey" look. Great stocking stuffer for the holidays, especially in bulk quantities such as this.

Out of this World cheaper via Amazon
After visiting the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C., I decided not to buy their overpriced gift shop items. Instead, I ordered a pack of 12 from Amazon and they arrived promptly. A big hit for the entire family...and I even got to enjoy some myself. Be aware that this product may not be picture perfect like the picture piece -- I usually find that each piece is cracked slightly, but since it tastes best in small bites which melt in your mouth, I prefer to use a knife or fork to sort of break it into imperfect bite size pieces that can be shared. It's not like eating a frozen ice cream sandwich, but it's a fun, unique treat for people of all ages.

Great price for a great product
I've previously been to the Huntsville Space Center in Alabama, and had the pleasure of tasting the astronaut ice cream from the gift shop. This spurred my interest in buying from Amazon. This product was on par with the taste of the freeze dried ice cream I've had before, but because of the delivery, many of the packages had broken chunks of ice cream. If you are planning on buying just for yourself, it is well worth the price. However, if you intend this to be a gift, be prepared to have fragments of the ice cream instead of the entire square.

Melts in your mouth!
I have loved Astronaut Ice Cream ever since I was about 8 years old and tried it at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center many many years ago. It has not been easy to find but thanks to the internet and Amazon I don't have to t go back to Alabama to get it. Our local science museum sells it in their gift shop for about $3.50 a package. I was able to get 12 for less than $2.50 a package. Nice savings! It is amazing how it can still melt in your mouth, have a creamy texture and a crunch sound! I personally don't recommend biting it, I hate the way that feels on my teeth. Now if we could just get the freeze drying process to take out the calories these would be perfect!I purchase lots of items through Amazon, some I get for free, some I get at a discounted rate, and most I pay full price. I will always disclose if I receive an item for free or a discounted rate. I do a lot of reviews so here is a break down on how I determine my star rating of a product:5 stars – I love it! It is awesome and I highly recommend everyone to purchase this product!4 stars – I like it, but there are some flaws. Don't we all have flaws? I would purchase again.3 stars - It was okay, but I would probably not buy it again unless there are no other options.2 stars – There may be worse products out there, but you can definitely find better choices.1 star – I dislike the product, I wish I had not purchased it and recommend others to not purchase. If my review was helpful please click the yes button below. Thank you!

Ho Hum Unique Ice Cream
I remember freeze dried ice cream when I was growing up in the 80s. The idea of astronauts and space shuttles were why I thought my kids, and others, would truly appreciate this unique tasting opportunity. Unfortunately the WOW factor was not there. Maybe it's because we scrapped the shuttle program. Maybe because this type of ice cream was only sent on one mission in the late 1960s, and the astronauts didn't even really like it. It tastes OK, and IS unique, but I have to say Dippin' Dots at the mall are a little more tasty and interesting than this. Wait, didn't Dippin' Dots go out of business? It was shipped quickly and professionally. I do still have 6 or 7 packets left. I still think it's cool. I wonder if Dippin' Dots would give you a discount if you bought 12.

A unique and interesting way to get your ice cream fix
I originally ordered that has been ice cream to put in my lunch as a novelty as every once in a while. I get a hankering for ice cream, but due to certain circumstances, like being in a computer or on the floor of the museum where sticky and dripping food substances are generally frowned upon. I thought this would be a nice alternative to curb my cravings for ice cream without having to worry about making a mess. And lo and behold, after an ice cream does indeed taste exactly like Neapolitan ice cream. I found that the trick is to let the ice cream cubes melt in your mouth rather than binding on them directly, yes it is a novelty. And yes it is sort of expensive because it is used by NASA. And if there is a space man on the package, but I figure if they taste like ice cream and doesn't make a mess. And if it's good enough for guys like Buzz Aldrin, and Chuck Yeager. Then it ought to be good enough for a lowly museum guide. I will definitely be ordering more of this product in the future just as soon as I finish eating the first 12 bags.

Excellent, yummy novelty
Excellent (but expensive) product. It works well as a novelty item, but don't expect to get your money's worth if you are just looking for a tasty treat. (You could buy a whole carton of Dreyer's for the same price.) I buy at least a ten-pack every year to serve to my college astronomy class, just because it's fun. The price fluctuates frequently at amazon, so if you are in no rush, I recommend watching it for a few weeks.
