The Beast in Ms. Rooney's Room (The Kids of the Polk Street School)

Thank goodness I can still find The Polk Street series.....they are still golden to use.....

Love this book and series for my Grandson!

I started reading a chapter a day with the Candy Corn book before Thanksgiving. This series has been a wonderful way to get early readers interested in books. The students are learning the names of the community in the Kids of Polk Street School and can't wait for the next chapter, then the next book.

Reilly has a well-formed beginning and middle, but the end feels rushed and incomplete. So many different characters are introduced that there is little time to see them develop. The illustrations nicely complement the story and may help those with struggling imaginations or who read so slowly that they forget the story. The illustrations are spread through the text very well - it is never more than two or three pages before the next one. This means young readers will be turning pages more often and feel they are making progress. The story deals with some children who are sent out of the classroom for remedial reading. This may encourage readers older than my suggested late first to early third grade level.Why 3 stars?:The story is completely plot-driven. Even at this beginning stage of reading children are still capable of meaningful discussion of what they are reading, but this book doesn't provide much material for it. If kids don't associate the higher thinking that comes from reading, it will be viewed as a chore and they will no longer enjoy it. This book does not encourage students to get excited about reading, or share it with others.

9月、新学期最初の日。同じクラス、同じ教室、同じ先生…　でも、クラスメイトの顔ぶれだけが、去年と違う。去年のクラスメイトは、今年は3年生。でも、Richardは、去年は1年生の赤ん坊だった奴らと一緒に、2年生のクラスにいる。なかなか、留年したことを受け入れられず、クラスに馴染めないRichard。でも、かばわれたり、同じ悩みを持ったり、勉強を教えてもらったりしながら、クラスメイトを認めていき、馴染んでいきます。読み書きが苦手な子どもを集めた補習クラス。でも、苦手なものがあっても良いんだ。すぐにできるようになる人と、ちょっと時間がかかる人がいるだけなんだ。そして、何かが苦手な人でも、きっと何か得意なものがあるはずなんだ。そういうメッセージがあって、じんわりあったかくなります。ちょっと要領が悪くて、でも優しくていい子のRichardが、なんだか愛しくなります。

９月の学期はじめの日、自称"ビースト"こと リチャード・ベストは、去年と同じ教室、同じ先生のクラスにいた。違うのはクラスの残りの生徒だけ．．彼等は去年は１年生だったのだ．．．そして去年の同級生はもう３年生。昼休みの野球は一緒に出来ると思っていたのに、もう仲間に入れてくれないし、人形劇鑑賞会の日だって、リチャードより後ろの席に座ってからかうし．．．悔しいリチャードは舌で前歯を動かしてみるが、ぐらりともしない。前歯が乳歯の２年生なんて僕くらいのものだろうなぁ．．．本の読み方の特別クラスも受けなくちゃいけない．．．　　周りより少し幼いリチャードの悔しかったり寂しかったりすることの多い学園生活を丁寧に描く The Kids of the Pork Street School シリーズ第１巻。このシリーズは、学校での授業内容の描写が詳しく、アメリカ人の７～８歳児がどんなことを勉強するのか？がわかるところが興味深いです。

この本は、Kids of the Polk Street Schoolの第一巻だ。このシリーズのいい所は、良くも悪くも、登場する子供達が普通の子供達っていう感じで、にくたらしくもあり、その一方で、一生懸命まっとうに生きようとする姿がかわいらしくもある。BeastことRichard Bestは新しい学年に上がる時に今までとは別のクラスに入れられてしまい、新しいクラスの友達となかなかなじめない。また、以前のクラスの友達と休み時間に遊ぼうとすると『もう同じクラスじゃないんだから』と仲間はずれにされてしまう。クラスで前の席のMatthewはBeastに親しげに話しかけてくるのだが、Matthewが寝小便癖が抜けないせいで、どうもBeastはMatthewと親しくする気になれない。しかし、徐々にお互いの事が分かってくる中で、全校で最もお行儀の良いクラスがもらえるバナーを獲得するべく、最初はBeastに対してつんけんしていたEmily ArrowやMatthewはBeastと意気投合してクラスに働きかけるのだが…私は、バナーの発表がある日に、誰かが何かポカをしてしまうんじゃないかとハラハラして気が気じゃありませんでした。(汗)

あらすじは皆さんが書かれているので、ここで省きます。多読学習用として読み始めたのですが、始めはなんだかさっぱり意味がわかりませんでしたが、読み続けていると話の展開やアメリカの授業の風景などになじんできます。はじめは読みにくいかな？と感じる方が多いかと思います。私もその一人でしたが、読み続けて今は第７話を読み終えたところです。無理をしないでゆっくりとなじんでいってください。私はこの１巻がわからなかったので、読み返してみるつもりです。
