This history of The Johns Hopkins University is an outgrowth of two earlier treaments of the subject: Johns Hopkins: Portrait of a University and Johns Hopkins: Centennial Portrait of a University by Robert P. Sharkey, published in 1961 and 1975, respectively. Their purpose - and that of this revised and updated edition - is to present a concise look at the impact Johns Hopkins has made upon higher education in America over the years and to describe some of the unique ways in which the University contributes to international scholarship and science today. No single volume can more than skim the surface of such a vast landscape. Thus we are grateful for the existence of such scholarly treatments of the University's history as those of John C. French, Hugh Hawkins, and Thomas B. Turner, among others, as well as for numerous historical articles in the Johns Hopkins Magazine and other short treatments. What this volume attempts to provide is an overview. For readers desiring deeper investigation of specific subjects, a wealth of additional material is available. As in the case of the earlier volume, events of the most recent years receive the closest attention, since they are nearest to our immediate experience and await the passage of more time in which their ultimate importance will be established.
