BRILLIANT AS THE WOMAN, HERSELF
By now, if you haven't watched all of GENTLEMAN JACK, you have robbed yourself of one of the most moving, inciteful, exciting and romantic series ever produced by HBO/BBC. This is no exaggeration. From writer to crew to entire cast, there is not one false note. The actors are brilliant, moving, dynamic, even in the smallest roles. The leads are ground-breaking and breath-taking. If you are "straight" and hesitating about viewing this masterpiece, shame on you. If you are LGBTQ and are hesitating because the leads are straight, shame on you! This series is perfection. PERFECTION.

Gentleman Jack Isn't for American TV
I was able to play the discs in my computer so it worked out OK. It is for "Region 2" - but it never explained what that meant. I assume it is for the UK and not the USA.Very good quality - and special features/interviews at the end.

There are two different copies of this series. This
This version is on two different discs. I haven't tried to play it yet but I think this is the British one, in which case you need an all region DVD player. Then I won another copy in a raffle which on four discs. I don't know if it is American manufacture or British. The Amazon one has a behind the scenes bonus, which I haven't seen yet, either. As far as the content, I first watched it on HBO, and it is a marvelous series in both technical and emotional ways. You couldn't ask for a more sensitive representation of lesbians.

These are burned on demand DVD's.
Fantastic series. BUT, these are burned DVDs and may not last too long.

Deleted American scenes are in this one!
This is a fascinating look at 2 flawed, pioneering women whose love eventually withstood everything & everyone! Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker is HEARTBREAKING in many scenes because she sobs REAL tears & exudes such vulnerability. Suranne Jones as the lead character, the charming lesbian Ann Lister, does an amazing job. For these 2 straight women to kiss each other so meaningfully is commendable. BBC & HBO have also done a stellar job as there is no real nudity at all (Except one 3-second flashback), nor cussing. Everything is done with class!

A Great Series
Gentleman Jack is one of the best series offered by HBO. I have been waiting impatiently for it to come out on DVD. I snatched it up when it came out. I highly recommend it and I am excited to know HBO renewed it for a second season, too.

Excellent Series about a woman we all should have heard of before now.
Excellent series about a gifted modern woman born in 1780. This is the BBC version which is longer!

One to get
I’m delighted the Suranne Jones / Sally Wainwright and the Maxine Peake / James Kent dramatisations of Anne Lister’s diaries are each unique and both brilliant. We seem to have gone from a bit of a famine since the five-star Portrait of a Marriage, to a relative feast. Three more stand-out series involving lesbian relationships (I’m including the super-smart, discomforting Killing Eve) in the last few years. Perhaps I shouldn’t feel quite so grateful, but I do.Apart from wonderful portrayals by Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, Gemma Whelan perfectly pitches her character as a strong - and often hilarious - foil to her dynamic, compelling older sister. (I’m not sure if Ms Whelan appeared in Gentleman Jack before Killing Eve, but she’s well and truly discovered now as a top talent.) Then Sophie Rundle’s Annie Walker finds her own sweet strength towards the end. Beautifully done.Let’s start thanking people. Thank you, Sally Wainwright and company. And I see that both Lister dramatisations, Killing Eve and Portrait if a Marriage are all BBC productions.. So thank you, BBC. I’ve just paid my licence fee, and although it’s a stretch for many of us in the poorer majority, I do feel happy (!) at contributing to the production of such first rate drama. If you’re looking for a tonic, and you’re a gay woman or you simply love love (either or both will do), then Gentleman Jack is one to get.

Oscar Winning Performances
If there were Oscars given for TV. the two leading ladies deserve them. I hope the BAFTA's acknowledge these bravura performances. Also the scriptwriting and the supporting cast. I doubt Suranne Jones will ever better this.

Fantastically written, brilliantly acted
This has to be the best thing iv watched on tv for a very very long time. Suranne Jones & Sophie Rundel deserve to win every award going for their portrayals of Anne & Ann. Its made me want to learn more about Anne Lister's life. I cannot recomend this show enough.

Fantastic little series
Normally I'm not a fan of period dramas, but this is fantastic I initially watched it because it is about Anne Lister and shibden park which is a local park to me, I thought it'd be a location spotting experience but no I really got in to the characters and the story with a insight into a alternative lifestyle in that era almost forgetting it was filmed here, well worth watching and indeed well worth a visit to shibden Hall

Outstanding
Every aspect of this production exceeded my expectations – 5 StarsThis DVD includes three discs covering all seven episodes from the first series of ‘Gentleman Jack’. In addition, there are bonus features which take a closer look at some of the processes involved in producing and filming. Certainly, a series that deserves to be watched more than once, this inexpensive DVD packs-in more than seven hours of top-quality viewing.I always anticipate good things from the BBC whenever they produce a new drama, but ‘Gentleman Jack’ is truly outstanding. From Sally Wainwright’s wonderful script, to the superb casting, and gorgeous filming, the attention to detail is stunning. If it were an entirely fictitious story it would be entertaining, but being inspired by the actual diary of the intriguing Ann Lister takes this excellent series to another level altogether. It has played a huge role in ensuring the historical record of this charismatic and brilliant woman is brought to the public’s attention.Overall: Hugely entertaining, and an exceptionally classy production. Highly recommended.
