No Gold Rush
Very disappointed, not sure how anyone can call a collection of Chaplin films, Essential, when The Goldrush and The Great Dictator are not included

From kid to king (in New York that is)
There are plenty of Chaplin blurays about. The one I got was through an Amazon dealer on import. It is on the Soulmedia Distributors and is Region B so plays fine in the UK. Much cheaper than the Park Circus releases and the transfers are fine. The menus are basic and there are no extras, but I've got those on the Warners DVD issues. The films are in 4:3 format. The version of Gold Rush is the re release with Charlie's narration, same as the Park Circus bluray. Unless someone does a UK release of the Criterion versions with commentaries, etc then I would recommend the 10 bluray Soulmedia release.

Crummy
This is an extremely poor quality item. Many of the films aren't even framed well enough to play on an old TV. Several films are so badly cropped that the heads and feet of the people on the screen are completely chopped off.Charlie spends a lot of the time on the edge of the frame while the activity in the background takes the stage. At these times he's often completely invisable and it's almost impossible to see how and why he's interacting with the other actors. The documentary is also generic and totally uninspiring, with a large part of its beginning been given over to a description of London. For a time I thought they'd put the wrong documantary on the disc, and given the quality of the edit it wouldn't have surprised me in the least. It's a shame that in their compilation films which such historical value could be so badly butchered. I can only imagine the company in question didn't have the rights to the original material. If you can buy it cheap and you love Chaplain, by all means pick up a copy, but being asked to pay full price for this collection, to be honest, is insulting. This item should be a historical record as well as a worthwhile entertainment product in its own right, instead what's offered seems to have been haphazerdly thrown together from tapes for a T.V. format that time forgot (not having the full width of the screen is bad enough, because it really does seriously detract from the quality of the product, but the heads and feet being cut off in some of the films is just unforgivable).

Charlie Chaplin Blu-ray Collection (10 discs)
Order this set with complete confidence: it represents the best Chaplin bargain on Amazon!Ol' Charlie's 10 main features, produced between 1921-1957, are included here in officially-licensed transfers from Soul Media of Denmark. The discs are all vanilla (plain), that is to say they have the film only, with no extras and are region B-locked. This makes them almost identical to the UK's Park Circus editions, except in some cases these actually feature superior audio and video mastering. You'll find more details on this set if you copy and paste this URL for the best online guide to watching and collecting Chaplin's films:http://www.brentonfilm.com/articles/charlie-chaplin-collectors-guideLastly, note that as usual Amazon.co.uk have lumped a load of irrelevant reviews under the wrong product. In this case they have listed some Amazon.com reviews for totally unconnected low quality Chaplin public domain DVD sets. Ignore.
