Try it - you'll love it
I have installed these on 2 of my 5 string banjos - Take your time and you can do it - don't need a luthier unless you have a friend who is one and will do it for nothing. However, I used a Dremel(tm) variable speed tool with the smallest drill bit in the case to start the pilot holes and then little by little increase drill bit size until was what I needed. I also placed it exactly where it needed to be mounted and wrapped it with blue Painters tape around the fret board to hold it in place while I drilled.I even accidentally let the bar slip out of the screw mechanism (which instructions say not to do since difficult to put back in place under the spring and they even offer to do it for you if you ship it to them) and was able to put it back without any problem. That is why they have the black wires through the holes so you don't let the bar slip out before installing.Bottom line: Love it - have used pen caps, 5th string capos that attach directly to 5th string (Strum Hollow and Banjo Highway - which cost twice as much as the Shubbs unit) and they work but are so easy to drop, fall off, or lose and you spend half your time at the gig looking all over the floor for it - or it gets lost somehow in your gadget bag. In other words, buy one and be brave - I did it twice and I am about as clumsy with tools as the next guy (or gal - can I still say that?) - or go ahead and pay someone - it's your banjo - do what you want, that's your privilege.

great capo
Easy to install. Used a piece of double sided tape down side of neck and stuck capo on that to set capo in proper position, marked drill holes, removed capo and drilled holes through tape, removed tape attached capo and it works beautifully. For me it's better than spikes which I tried and the Regan capo that I couldn't hold on too and dropped all the time. This is the capo for me.

Junk
I've been installing these capos on banjos for 46 years. This one is not the same product. It was a piece of junk. I installed it in the same place as always, about 1/16" behind the fretboard. It would not hold the string down because the string would slide out from under the capo. They used to be made in the United states but now are manufactured in China. I'm going to order a longer one with 3 screws instead of 2 and maybe it will be better.

Great solution for the 5th string
If you have never had one of these you probably need to get someone install it for you. If you are replacing one you just need to remove the old one and screw in the new one. It's the best solution I have found to capo the 5th string.

Typical Shubb Quality (high)
I liked the machining and nice operation. Wasn't very hard to install myself, but if you've got a $5k banjo and are all thumbs you may want to hire someone with experience.

Love it!!
I love this capo!! Wish I had ordered one years ago. I'm a 76 year old woman and I installed this with no problem. Works great!
