Chosen: A House of Night Novel

Slut shaming, 'that was rape right?', grooming by a predator teacher, annoying
I like this series well enough, but this book leaves a bad taste in my mouth. PC and Kristin Cast have some real work to do on 1) slut-shaming women, and 2) their presentations as ROMANTIC of statutory rape, sexual predation of a minor by a teacher, stalking, and consistent consent violations.Zoey is constantly slut-shaming ("ho" is never ok - a sexist term only thrown at women for daring to have appropriate biological sex drives) others and herself for... being teenagers with sex drives. Then at the same time, she also seems to make some pretty unethical dating choices ... though really, it's arguably nonconsensual with BOTH her ex and her teacher. Her human boyfriend TWICE refused to listen to her clear, repeated 'no!!!' and breakup, and texted/called obsessively. Then when she's broke up, clearly and using her words very explicitly, in person TWICE slashed his neck to entice her brand-new bloodlust that she wasn't trained yet to handle. And then she was stuck with him, Imprinted permanently. It was really pretty bad, in that 'females don't get to break up if males don't want to' way, and also what felt... awfully close to rape.Speaking of rape! Her predator teacher, who's been grooming her since she was 16 (****ICCCCKKKK****) started using his teacher/celebrity status (and expensive diamonds, and wine) to seduce her, then after their first kiss abruptly asked her to come to his room for sex. Well ain't that nice. Then when she was distraught with grief, smarmed up to her, then got her to sleep with him by slashing his skin (arrgh again?!), ripping off her clothes, then having sex with her. It's really distressing.Look, I get that it can be hot to fantasize about teachers/adults/famous people, but when adults in positions of power have sex with minors, there's something very wrong with them, and very very illegal. And rightly so, it's abuse of a position of trust, and very creepy. And just guess who pays the price for two men stalking and violating her consent? Oh right. The female. The rest of the book is just mediocre. Zoey has incredible friends but has Feelings that they get her winter themed birthday presents and makes them all feel bad. She doesn't have a plan for how to take down Neferet, who's coming back soon and will likely kill her, because snowflakes on her $300 boots and cashmere scarf, SOB. She still can't be bothered to read up on how to be an older vampire even though her failure to do so meant she was ignorant about how to handle bloodlust. Etc.A very concerning book in the series.

Addicted to this series but...
I'm really enjoying this series so far. I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I'm enjoying it actually. I bought the first book in this series years ago and just never finished it, stuffed in a box to survive through several moves and it found it's way back to the surface of my book collection. I'm in my 30s now and decided to give it another go and here I am, done with book 3 only 2 weeks later (this is quick for me since I'm an easily distracted reader). I would say that the only reason I'm giving this book and the previous 2 books 4 stars is because I'm noticing a very slightly annoying theme with repetition. Every book after the first in the series repeats the events that have happened. Maybe this serves as a reminder to the reader of what's taken place or perhaps to maybe allow someone to pick up any book in the series and get a feel for what's been going on without having to start from the beginning. It's not a terrible burden as I've deeply immersed myself in this story and become a fly on the walls of the House of Night. The repetition just seems to take up some unneeded space and time. I just know, going forward, that I can continue to quickly skim over all that stuff and jump back into the grit of the story. I look forward to seeing what comes next for Zoey and her "nerd herd."

Entertaining In A Flighty Kind Of Way....
Look, after reading a few reviews here, I actually felt people were a little too harsh. As an editor...no. They were all correct about that. Any book (s) published professionally, MUST be damn near perfect and so many sentences were run together without any proper use of comma placement. I almost thought this author didn't know commas had been invented until I managed to spot one or two here and there.Anyways, got tired of repetitive "by and by' s" and "I'm such a ho" but what we're witnessing while reading, is a teens every single thought she ever has and boy is it exhausting. We all went through this. It IS kinda strange to read every personal thought Zoey has, but many other writers do this so I was used to it.Is Zoey my favorite character? Never in a million years. She's spacey, dorky, stupid, boy crazy and just plain annoying. Best character in the series? Aphrodite by a landslide. She's the only one we've seen grow at all in the series so far. Every other girl speaks like they're 12, not older teens. I think the author made them too immature. Also, interesting take on the whole vampire thing. Not the best spin put on it.....just different. Why would ANY family accept their kid could simply get marked, leave their homes and families NOW or get sick and die, only to turn into a vampire or get sick and die because several of them don't make it anyways? Kinda rolled my eyes at all that.Entertaining enough to read? Sure. For how long? Not the entire series. It would drive me crazy.

My humble opinion
Addicted to the series. Always a good read. I love me some supernatural. I do like the author's style of writing, which feels natural and compatible to the way we talk and think. Good character development. Love the fact that the author references modern icons, movies and events. Story lines are interesting and filled with drama and edge of your seat excitement and anticipation. I do love to hate the villain and this one is evil. Only negatives are ones that waste good story space and time, such as, the repetitive descriptions of past events and characteristics of people and then the romantic events or inner insecurity issues can definitely use some editing as it can, in places, be blah blah blah....tedious and over descriptive for what is needed. I usually just skip over these sections and get back to what's really happening with the story. There are also some typos here and there that bug me on rare occasion because I wish I could just fix them myself! Oh, and though the length of these books are typical, I would love if some authors would just make books that are seriously think again, like 500 pages or more! Other than that. I highly recommend this series. You won't regret it.

On to book 4 - happy happy me.
I'm so engrossed in these books as its now 2am, and I have to be up in 4 hour but I still wanna read on. So take it from me these books are fantastic and well worth the money and the time. The story gets better as the books go on but after the book has finished you don't feel like it's been a waste of time. Each book builds the story and has its own little twists that you don't see coming x Now to get in a cheeky chapter or two before I get some sleep. HAPPY READING XX

Now were talking.
I read this book in less than a night it was pretty decent and fast paced. There is a bit more character development happpening -not much though- its one of them books where you know what is going to happen, but because you dont like the main character -not sure whether thats the authors intention or not- you just want to read about her getting f***ed over. -Litterally- and she deserved it.The whole boyfriend thing gets completely dropped near the end giving us a better start to the next book Untamed

Highly addidctive
Zoey and her friends are getting stronger on their relationships because the problems they face. Stevie Rae really needs the help and trust of her friends to choose the right path. The Goddess gave her an opportunity to choose but choices are never easy. Aphrodite is also facing new challenges but again the friendship between them will overcome the obstacles in their lives. I love these books and Chosen did not disappointed me. Although I have to say that Zoey needs to get a grip on the choices she makes boy wise!!! lol
