Just good entertainment,
Just good entertainment, can't vouch for faithfulness to Mankell's written source.Jeany Spark and David Warner add drama as daughter and father. It's too bad only 12 episodes were made. The extras are good especially the interviews. The bluray quality is crisp and colorful.

I've read the books and loved them, but the BBC series is dark and depressing. But the acting is superb!

Branagh rules
Branagh brings Wallander to life. I have read most of the Mankell books and Branagh fits like a glove - he is well cast.

Babelfish TV
I liked this show but living in a Nordic country the whole experience was quite bizarre and like watching a Swedish TV show with a babelfish in your ear. Everything you hear is english, but everything you see (police ID cards, newspapers, place names, street signs) are in Swedish. For sure this is because it was made by the BBC and there is a limited audience in the UK and other countries for non english TV but it's still strange to watch this show.I could live with a detective speaking british english if the other actor were swedish speaking english with swedish accents. But to see farmers in the swedish countryside speaking english as if they were from yorkshire is somewhat bizarre and too jarring (perhaps those who have only ever watched english language TV would be less troubled by this). However the acting and photography are very good - especially in HD since I bought the blu-ray version. If the swedish films with Krister Henrikkson had english subtitles on the blu-ray then I would buy those instead, but this series is a reasonable alternative. I will make do with DVD versions of the swedish film versions.

Each episode is a movie
I am a huge fan of Wallander, I wish that Henning Mankell would write some more Wallander books so that we could have more of the TV show! The production quality on this show is so high that each episode looks and feels like a movie and the high definition only adds to that.this box set contains all episodes from series 1&2, but considering that there are only 3 episodes per season it's not many. Each episode is 89 minutes long, which adds to the cinematic feel. The extras are interesting and relevant, but not excessive.

It took me some time to get used to seeing Kenneth Brannagh playing Wallander but he has grown on me and I really enjoyed the British version of this Swedish classic. I still prefer the original with subtitles but these are really very good. For anyone who has never read the books you are missing some great reads.

QUALITY
If you missed this series on TV like I did you must buy this box set. Not only are the individual stories all very gripping but if you have a large HD TV they look truly stunning and show Blu Ray at its best. Really glad I got this, it's a true quality box set and something to savour.
