Isabel (Michelle Williams) has dedicated her life to working with the children in an orphanage in Calcutta. Theresa (Julianne Moore) is the multimillionaire head of a media company who lives with her artist husband (Billy Crudup) and their twin boys in New York. When word comes to Isabel of a mysterious and generous grant for the financially struggling orphanage, she must travel to New York to meet the benefactor – Theresa – in person.

Best part of this movie was the end...
...when we're all put out of our misery (if you even make it that long, and if you don't I won't blame you.)This movie was ter.ri.ble. So bad. Badder than bad. If you could give scratch-n-sniff reviews, it would smell like rotten eggs, dog farts, and that really weird cheese my husband likes.I typically love these actors, but: (spoiler alert)- Michelle Williams is bizarrely impassive, her inscrutable expressions and much-delayed responses make you wonder if her character has suffered some kind of stroke and they edited that bit out of the film.- Julianne Moore is soap-opera-y in the worst way; her character's utterly implausible decision to bring her husband's long-gone ex-who-abandondoned-their-love-child back into everyone's life 20 years later because she is dying (from an unknown and unmentioned illness from which she is guaranteed to die in 3 months, yet still looks amazing with glowing skin and managing to run a bazillion-dollar company and treat her underlings like pond-scum when the mood strikes) and wants this completely unknown, emotionally untrustworthy ex to raise their other children...well, it seems beyond ridiculous.- Billy Crudup. Oh, Billy. Still adorable, but his one-note part is as flat as Julianne's character's is sharp. Together, their on-screen chemistry makes about as much sense as "Crenshaw" (I had to google something to give you a musical reference and this is the first weird piece of discordant music that came up. Enjoy. You're welcome.)In sum, you're better off watching a telenovela in a language you don't know while scrolling through your IG feed. You'll have spent your time equally as well and been likewise inspired.

Misses the mark
I loved the original movie and was looking forward to this. Unfortunately, it just totally misses the mark. Michelle Williams' character is so cold, so distant, that it is hard to garner any sympathy for her. Once you realize this, the movie is just boring. I could barely finish. In the original movie, Mads' character had a kindness to him, a soft spot. Williams never makes you feel those things. She is just an angry person with few redeeming qualities. Don't recommend, sadly.

I'm writing this review to defend it - I liked it.
So I thought this wasn't as bad as the other reviews. I really enjoyed it. It's an interesting story. The acting is really good sometimes and other times a bit over the top. I'm pretty picky about movies and this one kept my interest the entire time. It has some interesting twists. If you need something to chill out to or something to make you think about life a little differently, it's worth a try.

The idea is good - the application, not so much
Overall, a sweet concept. There is some cursing so use an app like VidAngel if you don't like that. No nudity or sexual content (yay, producers!). There will be a spoiler at the end of this... I'll let you know when. First, someone needed to do a bit more research on running a non-profit. There ARE times you have to question the motives of someone giving money, whether it is $2,000 or $20 million because, sometimes, there are strings attached. The strings don't always come with obligations. Sometimes the strings are through association. I can help legitimize someone (like a mobster) because if people know they are associated with me or my organization, then it gives them an some legitimacy, a facade of righteousness, in society, even though they keep doing the evil they have done. THAT is the part of this movie that they didn't get across well enough. Second, they spent way too much time on footage of zoom shots or artistic close ups of spiders and what it was trying to portray could have been done with great acting, a sigh, a tear, and a whisper of, "Oh, how I'll miss this!" (Here comes the spoiler alert). That extra time could have been used to develop the real artistic twist. One woman has a child and believes that that child has been given up for adoption, only to discover that the dad kept the baby. Adoption is a very beautiful thing. And trusting your baby to someone else to bring up is the ultimate sacrifice. In the end, the woman who raised the daughter is asking the other woman to raise her sons... but it misses impact. THAT scene, that information needed to be portrayed better and deeper for this movie to flourish. Instead, it felt flat. So, a fine movie to watch on a rainy day but I wouldn't pay to watch it. Wait for it to be free or attached to a subscription.

Thought-provoking and worthwhile movie
Bittersweet choices transformed into Joy. Gentle movie, easy to watch. Visually pleasing. All about selfish choices of a young woman transformed into a life saving work to help the helpless. Definitely a soul-satisfying watch especially during the season of giving. Michelle's performance is low-key perfection. Watch this movie, you will enjoy it.

Please take it out of your rentals for your own good.
This movie was absolutely awful. So mad I have to give it any stars. Enough said.

Low Key Soap Opera
So, if you love the soaps, you'll like this. But if you're expecting insight or emotional depth, it's just not there. The problem lies in the direction; his ideas straitjacket the actors and strangle the story line. It's probably true that some people would react to this situation with such flat affect, but there is no story in that. The trailer is deceptive, it looks exciting - the movie then just doesn't deliver. A poor effort all around. A brief saving grace are the mobile constructions of Dee Briggs - art you can't imagine Crudup's character could create. In contrast, there is the equally soapy Damage (1992) directed by Louis Malle and starring Jeremy Irons and Juliet Binoche. Adapted from a then popular novel, the film is a masterpiece of nuance. The story's movement, pace, lighting are brilliant. Irons and Binoche communicate powerful emotions in just a glace or gesture. The movie is intoxicating. Anyone who watched 'After....' should watch it. The fans because it is right up you alley; the non-fans because the comparison will awe you and show you how a tale like this should be told.

loved it!!
ill start off by saying i love michelle williams acting and always have. shesone of the most underrated understated actresses alive. then you add julian moore and this is bound to be great cinema. loved everything about this wonderful movie
A**,
. Julianna Moor's stellar performance
The C.D arrived within days of my order . The story itself showed the compromises front line members of international charities are forced to make with regard's to securing continued international funding . . Julianna Moore's performance is deeply felt and should be remembered at awards season . Michell William and young Abby Quinn also impress and Billy Crudup is good in a difficult role . The Indian child actor in early scenes also deserves recognition . A thought provoking film !
