The dual-sided 3000 over 8000 grit Seido combination whetstone allows for sharpening knives and then honing the edges to a smooth finish. With a fine to ultra-fine grit, this stone works best when wet down for both lubrication and cleaning. This premium whetstone makes a great gift for any kitchen enthusiast, knife collector or butcher. The stone easily stores away in a cabinet or kitchen drawer when not in use.

Meh.
I don't think this is truly an 8,000 grit stone. My reasoning, is that my the 3,000 grit stone opposite the 8,000 on this same block, polishes just as good as the 8,000 grit. Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm new to sharpening, but I'm confident that the 8,000 grit is supposed to get a near mirror finish, and this doesn't get anywhere near that. It gets it sharp, but I have to use my ceramic rod to get the near mirror finish. Anyway, it still works pretty good, I just think that you get what you pay for. A cheaper stone gives weaker results.

So far so good, I have a 4000 grit nagura stone that I use with this stone. It creates a great slurry and does really well. My set up is 600, 1000, 6000, and 10000. This stone completed the line up. I definitely recommend it.

Knives never sharper
I'm a first time manual sharpener - I bought this as well as a 250/1000 grit stone to sharpen my kitchen knives. This takes some getting used to - you'll need to find the stroke style that you're most comfortable with. It took me about 2 hours to sharpen 8 knives, however my knives were severely dinged along the cutting edge. I expect that the time to sharpen a knife will go down for me significantly as I grow accustomed to the process, and they are kept truer. This stone is the powerhouse of the items I bought for purchasing - the majority of the work is done on it. The 250 helps to get the larger knicks out, but once they are out the 3000 does a fantastic job of smoothing the blade, and the 8000 will make the blade capably of shaving hair off your arm.The only downside is that I was surprised at how quickly the stone wears. Make sure to keep your wear even, and it is worth getting a stone fixer as well. I think that on the 8 knives I consumed about 20% or so of each side of this stone. As with the time, I'm sure as I get better I will become more efficient with the use of the stone itself, but it does go faster than I expected.

nice quality, easy to use and maintain. make sure that you use a flat grind wheel or sand paper after a few sharpenings to remove any concave wear marks that you might get over time.

WARNING: This is NOT a 8,000 grit stone, as advertised. As I moved from my 6,000 grit king whetstone to the Seido 8,000 grit, it noticeably took away the mirror polish from the 6,000 and dulled the edge.

8000 grit side doesn't do near as well as i would expect from a 8000 grit.
