Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick at their best.
Reese Witherspoon was at her perfectly perky best with this role. She played the girl in high school who was always the best at everything that must now be class President too. She would do anything to win. Then there was mild mannered Matthew Broderick. A respected teacher who had enough of this perfectly perky teen and decided he just couldn't let it happen and did everything he could to stop her from winning. But Karma's a bitch and he got paid back 10 fold for every action he took against her. He is willing to risk his health, family, career and even his respect to stop her from ruining more lives with her constant success. Of course eventually things don't go as expected and hilarity ensues. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is it isn't leaving the best of messages to young people about doing the right thing for the right reasons. Except maybe for Karma paying him back for his rotten deeds, he and her end up OK in the end.Even the support cast did a good job with their parts.I recommend this movie for a few laughs.

Major # Metoo inappropriate
In the first of this movie (which I assumed would be entertaining in a vein similar to Legally Blonde) a high school student is groomed and has an affair with a married teacher and if it was supposed to be funny or entertaining it was anything but. It was actually quite disturbing because it seems right after that, the movie appeared to be heading toward a flirtatious relationship with another older married male teacher. My high school daughter and I were so sick to the stomach we could no longer watch the movie to see where it would go .A total waste of money and I wish I had never purchased it before reading more about it. Given the #MeTo Movement I’m beginning to think movies with messages like this need to come with a warning box.

On election night Nov '18 I hosted a movie night in my place and this was THE perfect film (for a bunch of guys viewing from Brooklyn.) I have loved this since I first saw it but WOW I forgot about certain moments and details. It's a freaking great movie. WATCH IT

Great acting, suspenseful and an interesting story
Great acting, suspenseful and an interesting story and a brilliant work of dark comedy. Considering the age of this movie, I obviously missed this the first time around as I don't even remember seeing a commercial for it back in 1999. Thankfully I found it on Prime and this is easily one of the best movies I've seen in 5 years. The people who gave this movie a low rating seem to be doing that based purely on some of content offending them. There is no doubt some controversial topics, but in my opinion, they just add making the whole package of this film great.

A surprisingly dark little comedy with sparkling performances. Adult themes come disturbingly close to real life, couched in glib dialogue and a squeaky clean suburban high school for a backdrop. Same genre as Ridgemont High et al., but less compromising with the realities and foibles of human nature. Reese Witherspoon brims with talent as the narcissistic world beater in training. And fair warning: she does get wet.

Not Your Average Dirty Comedy
Great movie, FOR ADULTS. This is a rated R film so I don't understand the reviews saying it is inappropriate or that the content was racy... that's what this movie is about. This is not your average "dirty comedy" because it actually has a very elaborate and detailed back-story which is interesting to watch unfold and consistently makes sense. This is one of the top-notch adult comedies and I definitely recommend it for a night in with your girlfriends/guyfriends or your spouse if you are in to that sort of thing and are mature enough to handle sexual content in a film.

Awesome Flick!!!
Excuse the pun, but I would give this ten stars if I could. This black comedy/satire has so much going for it, I hardly know where to begin. This film, along with 2006's "Thank You for Smoking", proves that it is possible to produce an adult, intelligent, and thoroughly entertaining film without pandering to the lowest common denominator mentality that most producers aim for.The entire cast and acting is top notch. Broderick and Witherspoon are the only big names. The rest are character actors you may or may not have seen before. The movie is REAL. It was shot in a real high school in Omaha, using real high school students as extras. Sometimes, you can see actual classes in session. This gives the film a realistic feel.Anyone who has attended high school has had a Tracy Flick and a Paul Metzler in their class. They are not simply stereotypes--their existence in real life makes the story real (the president of MY senior class was on the football, baseball, and basketball teams, and later became manager of the New York Mets when his professional baseball career was cut short because of a knee injury).I found Jessica Campbell to be the surprise delight in the movie. She is as disaffected as Paul and Tracy are normal. When they are giving their speeches, Tracy delivers a by-the-book speech, and Paul delivers a barely coherent speech (leaving the galleries staring silently). THEN, Tammy starts HER speech with "Who cares about this stupid election?" She promises to do only one thing as Student Council President--immediately dismantle the student government so nobody will have to sit through one of "these stupid assemblies again!" She speaks the truth, and the former darkhourse candidate is rewarded by thunderous applause and hoots of "Tammy! Tammy!" She is punished for her impudence with a three-day suspension ("Being suspended is like having a paid vacation.")An entertaining movie that actually makes you think, with many memorable lines, with actors who look like real people, with an intelligent, literate story line, "Election" is simply too marvelous for words.

worth a look
Always a fan of Matthew Broderick . this film is no exception ,was not keen on some of the language in it (don't expect it from him) but a clever and witty script well acted and I think underrated.A worth while addition to anyone collection especially if you a fan of both leading actors.Delivery was prompt and well package .Oh one more thing if I had waited three weeks it's now being shown on sky

Sublime
This is a fantastic film. So dark, ambiguous and funny. It touches on many sensitive issues. Is it good to be a super ambitious kid, sexuality, the dilemmas that teachers face, whether it is good to achieve or not to achieve, marriage and the machinations of institutions.Jim McAllister, the teacher, is a great character who engages your sympathy, despite his flaws. This film makes you think hard about how to be in life, and makes you laugh when it still doesn't work out.

Best Matthew Broderick film since Ferris Buller
This is a great film. Reese Witherspoon is brilliant in her role as a model student. Matthew Broderick's descent into misery is entertaining to watch as is Flick's meteoric rise into politics. It has some really humorous moments and is really worth a watch.

An Election that doesn't make you crazy.
I don't think that Election is a Great Film, but it's a good one. Which is why I bought it. I'd recently watched Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde and was spellbound by how lame it was. I dimly remembered having seen her in this when it came out and having liked it, so I bought the DVD and watched it again. I still like it. In some ways, Mathew Broderick is made for this kind of comedy, so that's good too. And given how dispiriting elections recently have been.... Enough said.

Boring
Matthew Broderick and Reece Witherspoon are both excellent, but the film itself is tedious and disappointing, had to force myself to watch to the end and will now be giving it away to the first person who wants it.
