Beautiful steelbook to go with a wonderful TV series!
Being a lover of the books, I was thoroughly excited for the BBC TV series and, on the whole, it was absolutely brilliant! I ordered the steelbook shortly before Series 1 finished and it arrived in perfect condition. The box (with the beautiful multiple worlds design on the front) comes with four art cards (portraying Lyra, Marisa Coulter, Lord Asriel & Lee on the front and four posters which were posted to the @darkmaterials social media accounts last year on the back) as well as three discs: the first two contain three episodes each and the third the final two. Disc three also includes 5 special features (an introduction to HDM as well as four different features for: the building, adapting the novel, making the dæmons and the costumes) however these features have been uploaded to BBC social media previously and are nothing new (a shame they decided not to give a few more behind the scenes extras to fans who have paid for it).The series itself is wonderfully acted (Ruth Wilson steals every scene she's in) and the sets are stunning - a hundred times better than the film of 2007 - although, as many have pointed out, there is a noticeable lack of background dæmons and a few poor decisions that were made which means some may not enjoy the series as mmuch as they could. Overall, this TV series is definitely a must-watch (easily one of the best BBC shows of 2019) and the steelbook a great addition to the collection of any Pullman fan.

Darker than you might expect
Firstly a confession. I have not read Philip Pullman's trilogy. I did watch the first series broadcast on TV avidly, knowing something of the rather ascerbic Pullman. It did not disappoint. Then I bought the BluRay, having at last got a suitable player. Now, it may be my faulty memory but it seemed to me that there was quite a bit more material on the BluRays than I had seen in the original broadcast and toward the end (principally episodes 7 and 8) I felt the more adult themes were much enhanced. The result was a good deal more gripping to my mind and I now wait impatiently for the second series, which may be some time coming due to the current Coronavirus restrictions. It will be worth the wait.

Great Series - very poor extras
We are very spoilt with extras on the Doctor Who range and I know this is to review the box set Blu-ray of his dark materials series one I’m not going to comment on the episode specifically as I thought they were wonderfully done and all this is in the episodes on the Blu-ray but I’m really disappointed about the lack of special features the lack of commentaries albeit I know that they’re expensive but it’s disappointing you haven’t got any at allNot even a roundtable discussion around the series or an in-depth documentary around Philip PullmanYou sort of can accept a reduction of special features as the series is so new to a point but for an extra £10 and you buy one of the Doctor Who series blue rays and I’ve got all of the special features issued on the previous DVDs plus an excellent documentaries I just find it very disappointing there’s not a consistency here or maybe were just lucky as Doctor Who fans having a great team behind them pushing? The series is great though absolutely take the point that others have said about maybe not quite enough Demon representation but that’s the only criticism I think you can’t really knock the pacing because the series is being told as a long series you have to accept that but no excellent

Tick-box television
Lord! If there was any evidence that film and television by committee is a bad idea this is it. You need a person with vision to bring out the best in an adaptation, not eleven executive producers.I read the trilogy many years ago and enjoyed it, but can only remember the general feeling and the depth of the characters in them, rather than any particular plot points. This series did nothing to jog my memory.Episode five was the best, four stars, it had pace and some mystery mixed with adventure. After that, the proceeding episodes were let downs, two and three star. Will's entry in episode five was followed by him walking around doing nothing relevant for the rest of the series, in what was obvious filling. The special effects were good, but were not particularly well integrated into the whole. The editing was often jarring with continuity errors. The bears seemed to only wear their armour to bed.I will reserve judgment on the acting, except to say it was often unconvincing. There are subtitles for the HOH – good. The Subtle Knife, I can't say that I'm particularly hopeful.

Phantastic show and stunning box
Love this show! So well done, enjoyed every episode a lot!! It's very true to the book and lots of care has gone into crafting the world. The cast absolutely phenomenal and can't wait to see more, hopefully the entire trilogy is realized. For the Blu-Ray Box, I have to say it's beautifully done - love the high quality images and fold out format, as well as the very nice art cards! Fantastic product.
