Entertaining show that will get you thinking
This is a surprising show. Based on the title and subject matter, it may seem like a superficial love letter to the culture of the rich, the shallow and people famous for being famous, but it is so much more. I haven't seen the 1st season DVD yet, so this review is based on the 1st season episodes aired on ABC. Hopefully there will be DVD extras that add to the enjoyment of this set, though details haven't been provided yet.In Dirty Sexy Money, the writers explore the meaning of extraordinary wealth and power, how those things can support an individual and give freedom, but also how they can distract people from their own true selves, their purpose and from what is really important. What does it mean to grow up in an environment with limitless resources? To live in an environment where anything, or anyone, you want can be bought? How does an individual in that environment find purpose or meaning in his/her life and relate to others? Is it a given that people in that situation will be corrupt or shallow? Or do we, as the public, just expect them to be, and so they seem to live up (and down) to our expectations? And what if you or I had the opportunity to join them, would we? And at what cost? Those are the kinds of questions Dirty Sexy Money asks. Along the way there is a fun, rollicking soap opera-ish ride, with scheming characters, luxurious sets, beautiful people, gorgeous New York City scenery (in the pilot anyway) and amazing, amazing acting.Sure, in this first season, there are uneven moments as the show finds its tone and its footing, but the characters and the situations will draw you in and entertain you nonetheless. If you want, come for the flash, the beautiful people/clothes and the humor (there will be plenty), but stay for the writing and the performances (pretty much everyone in the cast delivers, and there are moments with Donald Sutherland, Peter Krause, Jill Clayburgh, Glenn Fitzgerald, Seth Gabel and others that are breathtaking) , and the commentary the series makes about how morality, balance, and humanity might even survive in our world, a world which often seems to only value superficial beauty, power and wealth.

Region 2 DVD will not play on USA Region 1 DVD Players (BUT, there is an easy solution.)
This DVD is Region 2 so it was a learning experience. The USA and Canada is Region 1. I found out that the world is divided into several Regions for DVD's. When you purchase a DVD player it is calibrated for the region in which it is sold, and as such will not play DVD's from other Regions. So, I purchased (through Amazon) an LG All Regions DVD Player. Only about $55 with sales tax.......works like a charm. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the 3-disc Season One of the series. I already have the second and final season (Region 1). Enjoyed the short lived series since the family portrayed is the "Darlings" and my last name just happens to be Darling. In the series they are obscenely wealthy and privileged, and I'm neither.

Modern Day Soap Opera
This show is about an insanely wealthy family and how they try and control everything and everyone around them with their money. Sadly it probably has a lot of truth to it. This family is so snotty, obnoxious and self centered that it's hard to connect with any of them. The daughter of the show is Karen Darling and she is so shallow that a puddle of water has more depth than her. Yet all these men fall head over heels for her...and not just for her money but they really "love" her...yeah right! She is also anorexic (along with her old mother) and needs help immediately. Not one of the Darling children ever had anything intelligent to say EVER. The only one that had any brains is Trip Darling, the father. And you're never really sure if he is a bad guy or a good guy but I liked him anyways. With all that being said it's easy to get wrapped up in the drama. And there is a LOT of drama. Just when you think you know where they are going with a story line it completely goes in the opposite direction. They definitely keep you guessing!

Didn't think I would like it, but I did!
A little bit on the goofy side as far as the story line, but the acting is great and the characters make the story believable. If you love watching things that glorify the rich and famous, you will love this series. The pilot episode is fantastic, and really sets up the season well. By the end of season 1, you can hardly wait for the next one to come out. I love the parallels between some of the characters and people in real life (a few will come to mind while you are watching). If you are looking for a lighthearted show, this is a great one for you. Enjoy!

Great show. Peter Krause = amazing
Picked this up because of Peter Krause's work in Six Feet Under. This has a similar feel to it, although it's not as quirky as Six Feet Under. It's very much a study of the characters and their relationships with one another. It's a first season, so a good deal of the episodes are just introduction, and with such a sizeable cast, it takes a while. But you won't be bored because there's no lack of story. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing who's aligned with who, and what will happen next. If you like character driven drama, with a side order of murder mystery, this is for you.

Awful but some will like it, and it's cheap.
There are some reviewers on this site who hate the show and some who loved it --- sums it up really as the show is like marmite. If you wish to be entertained by a series that is full of "individual ghastliness" may I point you in the direction of 'Succession', Seasons 1 & 2, both of which have been reviewed by critic Micheal Elkington whose assessment is spot on and sums up perfectly the quality of that award winning series with Brian Cox. The only award I can give to 'Dirty Sexy Money' is the ubuiquitous Raspberry but it is a pale forerunner of the intelligent drama that comes with the the Cox show.I found DSM revolting but that's merely the personal opinion of someone who hates soaps and the multitude of celebrity focused programmes that dominate our tv schedules. DSM is about a rich dysfunctional family and their daily lives and the efforts of a 'straight' lawyer played by Peter Krause (rather wooden in this series) to keep them out of jail or worse. Yes something like 'Dallas' and 'Dynasty' but with the emphasis being on ugly excess.Excess money --- $1 million spent on a celebration party for instance.Excess sex --- bed hopping by many but no nudity shown (I didn't spot a bare breast) and certainly no intimacy conveyed. What kind of daytime slot was this broadcast in ?Excess dirt --- secrets hidden and uncovered of murder, questionable parentage, religious bias, dirty politics, business deals, blah blah blah.I give it 3 stars because, put simply, the acting, the script, the direction, the sets, everything made me CRINGE, which must mean that somebody deliberately and successfully attacked my sense of values and propriety. They meant me to hate it and I did and I don't wish to be detrimental to any of the reviewers that gave the show glowing reviews, it's just my tastes and my take on what I had to endure --- I think my wife was quite sensible and was quietly amused by the proceedings despite my shouts of derision.Probably the presence of Donald Sutherland did it for me, wonderful as ever --- he's to blame for trapping me into watching every episode.Thankfully only 10 crass episodes, each only 40 minutes duration, loads of bonus features that I resisted watching, English subtitles. I look forward to being sickened by season 2 which is as far as the series reached.

RICHLY DYSFUNCTIONAL
The title is certainly more eye-catching than those of "Dallas", "Dynasty" and "The Colbys", but the content is the same - an OTT family awash with money, morals in rather shorter supply. The Darlings' lawyer died in a plane crash after four decades of service. Son Nick (Peter Krause, ex-"Six Feet Under") has taken over. Outwardly always so calm, so reasonable, he has a secret agenda. Did one of the family have his father killed? He WILL find out.And what a family! Patriarch Tripp oozes charisma and good humour but is ruthless and manipulative. (Donald Sutherland is superb, a major reason to watch.) Wife Letitia (Jill Clayburgh) loves drink and for forty years had a secret lover. (Work it out.) Oldest son Patrick (Michael Baldwin) is being steered towards the White House, but his transsexual mistress may prove an impediment. His brother Brian is a mean spirited preacher with an illegitimate son. Sister Karen alternates between weddings and divorces. Twins Juliet and Jeremy compete to see who can be the more empty headed and extravagant. Hovering in the wings and aiming for centre stage is powerful Simon Elder (Blair Underwood) - he with reason to hate the Darlings and to bring them crashing down. Nick remains astonishingly restrained in the circumstances, crises requiring almost 24/7 attention. Not for a moment to be taken seriously, this is glossy escapism - a welcome diversion from television's grimmer offerings. Amidst the laughs there are occasional hints of greater substance. Note, for example, Brian - he initially so odious but gradually seeming to develop more worthy aspects. Lots of interesting, illuminating bonuses. (Often scenes in New York owe much to green screen.)Recommended for those who wish simply to sit back and enjoy.

Dirty Sexy Money comes up top trumps over other US drama!
With the other drama series out in America at the moment 'Dirty Sexy Money' has surely come out on top. This opening season has been throughly enjoyable and has been led by the great Donald Sutherland. He shows that he still has it in him to produce a first class performance as the head of the Darling family. Themes of love, lust, murder and the odd politics thrown in give this drama something different, and I have to say at last some good television has finally come over from our American friends.May this series long continue and be enjoyed by all!
