Castle: By the Author of The Way Things Work

These two copies were purchased for two five year olds and their fathers. Both families found the drawings inspiring and enjoyed reading the books together.

The seller did a good job shipping the product. This is a fantastic book on how castles were built in the middle ages. The text is short and tells a narrative. The illustrations are what make this book. Detailed pen-and-ink illustrations that paint a beautiful and educational picture. Definitely a classic. (Bonus - watch the old 1980's documentary on this book.)

My 13 year old and I read this book together. He absolutely loved reading about the history and building of the castle. He has another larger DK book on Castles and as we read told me about his previous knowledge on the topic we were reading about and expanded our discussion. The images (drawings) being b/w are a perfect match so that details of the castle stand out. After reading this story, we watched the accompanying PBS special Castle by the same author. The movie is s a perfect tag-a-long going into further details and highlighting real castles and showing the details that were discussed in the book. To follow up on the book/movie, my son is now building his own brick castle. We ordered a kit and it includes everything to make little bricks from molds and then directions on exactly how to build the castle. I highly recommend purchasing the book, movie and castle building kit together if you or your child is interested in castles and/or medieval studies. All three provide great discussion, for both visual and auditory learners as well as a hands-on experience.

I remember checking this look book out of my school library as a kids and now gladly purchased it as an adult. Still holds up as just a delightful visual journey of an construction of a real-ish castle.

Great book for anyone curious about how castles were built. Simple enough for grade school kids, but detailed enough for interested adults. The illustrations are very well done.

It’s great, but wait!I recently found a colorized version.Looks amazing. Go get that one.

I have loved this book since I first came across it in the 3rd grade. I consider it a classic! It helped my imagination run free for years of daydreams about castles and knights. It also made me interested in drafting and architecture. I pretty much single-handedly read a copy of this to death from the school library as a kid. Twenty-four years later, this book is still a joy to read; and now I'm glad to have a copy to hand to my own children.Most of David Macaulay's children's books are great - if you like this one, you owe it to yourself to read the others.

This beautiful book with black and white illustrations has lots of informative text on each page. The information is shared in an easy to follow manner and intrigues the imagination. This book was one I remembered checking out from the library as a child. I am so happy it is still in print now that I have a baby of my own. I hope that she enjoys reading it when she is old enough and that this book inspires her imagination and curiosity as it did mine!

Wonderful book. As a child I had the other one called Cathedral. Cathedrals are cool, but I thought wouldn't it be amazing if the same author did a book on Castles. Now that would be cool. I was delighted when I discovered this. Even if you know a lot about castle design and architecture, there are defenses and design features I had no idea about. I love this book.

Almost as good as his City book. The only disappointment is it is far fewer pages.

I find that book very instructive more then other books up there. I'm someone visual and those drawing help me understand more the castle building process

I received the book on time and it was exactly as described (in used but good condition). Loved this series as a kid and it's nice to have it in hardback for my daughter.
