Belknap's Waterproof Grand Canyon River Guide All New Edition

Good for Grand Canyon raft passengers
This book is good for Grand Canyon rafting passengers, but it does not replace some of the better guide books for rowing the river. We took this book along with the Rivermaps LLC guide book for our 21 day private trip. While this book has some good trivia type information about the river, a good wild life and plant section, and a good geologic section, it is no match for the Rivermaps LLC as a river runners book. It simply lacks critical information and detail about rapids. For the raft passenger on a commercial trip I would recommend this book so you can follow along where you are and know whats coming up, and look up any plants or wildlife you see. Its also great to have river books like these to make notes in about where you camped, where you had a good hike, or even where you had a nice lunch. However if you are planning on rowing the river on a private trip this is no replacement for the Rivermaps LLC book.

Amazing Detail that Defies the Cheesy Cover Art
I'm glad this product has pictures of some of the inside pages because that gave me some hope that this might possibly be a useful purchase for an upcoming full canyon river rafting trip. And it definitely did not disappoint! Don't let the cover art fool you, this guide is a must-have purchase for a river rafting trip. It is simultaneously easy to follow yet jam packed full of details, historical insights, gorgeous photos. But the one thing I can't stop raving about to friends and family is the stunning topographical mile-by-mile map of the river that is unparalleled to any other guide I've seen out there. The geological background is also amazing and extremely interesting. I have not yet gone on my trip, but I am definitely taking this guide on my trip for reference, follow up reading about the sites we see as well as journaling my trip along the river and through Grand Canyon.

This Belknap Waterproof got a real test in the river.
On the second day of our rafting trip through the lower Grand Canyon we got to far to the left on rapid 231 and our raft overturned dumping eight of us in the water along with our gear. I had Belknap's Waterproof Grand Canyon River Guide in my day pack which I though was secured, but the strap securing it broke and the pack went through the rapids, along with most of us, and was later fished out by one of the other boats. When I got it and checked it out it was fine other than the water causing the pages to stick together somewhat. But, it was in very good shape and proved to be a very useful guide throughout the four day trip.I highly recommend this book if you are planning a trip down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. Besides being an excellent guide to the entire canyon experience and the rapids encountered, it also gives interesting historical information and many pictures of things you'll want to see for yourself. It's not a book for river guides, but is great for the rest of us.

A must for rafters
I did a 10 day rafting trip on the Colorado in 2000 and I bought one of these then. I went with a group of 36 like minded people. My wife and I went on the same trip - but 7 days in duration - with a similar group of 24 like minded people. I had lost my guide book from 2000 so I did not hesitate to buy a new copy. It had been updated with lots of new information so was well worth it. It is printed on waterproof paper with waterproof ink, so you can use it during the trip - just don't close it up to dry or it will stick together. Both trips were with Hatch River Outfitters and IMHO the best on the river.

Excellent!
This waterproof, durable 120 page guide with topo maps is excellent. Rafted the 280 mile Grand Canyon stretch for the first time. There were 4-5 of us who brought this river guide. It is updated often, one passenger brought his 1970s edition and it was interesting to compare with the latest edition. Positives: good maps, waterproof, sturdy booklet, fine pictures, just the right amount of history. Really good pictures of different species of plants, cactus, flowers, lizards, birds, mammals. Size is perfect, 8 1/2" x 6", will fit in your raincoat pocket. Good read before my trip, carried it in the raft with me on the river.
