Great feature that it focused on areas that we
Was very helpful in planning trip and during trip. Great feature that it focused on areas that we, as so many tourists, visited. Did not have to carry a heavy guide book with info on areas we were not going to visit. Plus, greater detail on the areas in question.

Info on India travel
It did give some good information but definitely not enough info on lodging.Been to India twice but it has been many years and I do know there was much more that could be said on lodging which I wanted specifically . However there is some good info in book.

Good resource, but you'll need additional to plan a trip to India
Essential India does cover a subset of India, but you may find, as I did, that it matches your plans. The most useful information in this book for me was reviews of restaurants and places to stay. I found all the recommended places to be very good and quite as they described. While I largely use on-line resources for this kind of thing, particularly TripAdvisor, the Fodor reviews are much more likely to match my expectations. I found that the information on what to do was often sketchier, which was disappointing given the limited area described. For that, I did much better hunting on line. However, if someone did not want to spend time looking on line, this book would be an good planning tool and excellent resource while in India. There's no way I would have wanted to lug physical books around, so this was worth the price to me as there weren't many e-book choices available. My only other real choice was the Lonely Planet guide. I didn't buy it, so I really can't compare. The greatest lack in this e-book is the lack of maps and photos. It meant I rarely used it as I was actually going about my day; rather, it was what I used in planning the next day.

This book gave me the practical information I needed before visiting India. AAA publishes nothing on traveling in India. Fodor's book opened my eyes to many exciting possibilities while traveling there.

Great book for those not interested in backpacking
Love fodors. Great advice for nice hotels. My only criticism is that there isn't enough info. We also got the rough guide which provided a lot more info and options overall. Fodors was great for suggesting nice, higher end hotels, but lacked the detailed city info.

Map or pictures woul be helpful to find sights
All in all the book really provides a lot of details and insights. However several times we struggled to find the sights described. Also many locals didn't understand the English name used in the book for a certain temple or sight so that even asking cab drivers would not often get us anywhere. Street names are hardly ever displayed anywhere so that doesn't help finding the building you are looking for. A more detailed map with a landmark or even better a small picture of the sight described would have helped us a lot to find the sights easier.
