Father’s Day Gift
Bought for my dad for Father’s Day. He’s a lifelong fisherman and previously said he felt boats were necessary to do fishing in south Florida. I got this for him to allow him to pursue his hobby in new and more accessible/spontaneous ways. He loved it!

Steve Kantner has put together a concise & complete guide to South Florida's wonderful world of fairly easy
This book is a treasure-trove of information for those of us who want to discover what the true nature of fishing in South Florida is all about. Steve Kantner has put together a concise & complete guide to South Florida's wonderful world of fairly easy, accessible fishing. The beauty of this book is that it reaches out to fishermen of all ages & experience levels, in a simple & very readable way. Kantner has added a new dynamic to South Florida fishing. He has provided a deep insight based on his many years of experience, into its highly varied & complex fishery. It guides the reader through a detailed, & intensely interesting story of each region, the spots, species, baits, & best used techniques in each. It covers many methods of fishing - fly rodding, spinning etc & how each method is best employed in the various fishing regions he has divided the Southern part of the State into.Being a fly-rodder, this book has helped deliver me from the "Winter doldrums" many of us experience until the beach action heats up again in the late Spring, early Summer. While I knew it was always there ( & not owning a boat ), I didn't feel as though I had all the knowledge & know-how I needed to really take advantage of the amazing fishery here in South Florida - most of it fairly easily accessible by foot as I learned from the book. Kantner has really created a fantastic fishing adventure for all people who love to fish - & along with that, a wonderfully simple road-map, full of details & interesting side notes, anecdotes, comments & photos. All his years of experience have allowed Kantner to develop this guide & to now pass it on. For those of us who love to discover new species & areas to fish them - basically in our own back-yards, amazingly - this book needs to be in all of our fishing bags - take advantage; It will be the best few dollars you ever spent. Thanks Steve - amazing job.

"Ultimate" ... a fitting description for this guide
I’ve visited all South Florida's fishing piers while growing up and was as intrigued by the activities of anglers on the boards as I was by the surrounding blue waters. Today, as a South Florida historian, I saw an opportunity to learn a bit more about this area’s topography while quenching an interest in fishing with Steve Kantner’s "Ultimate Guide to Fishing South Florida on Foot." This book by the renowned angler and professional guide provided all that—and more.A disclaimer: I am not an angler nor will ever be.But Kantner’s knowledge of these subtropical environs— the Everglades, canals, lakes, spillways, other waterways, beaches, jetties, docks, and their ecosystems is engrossing. His book is not only about the remote, secluded honey holes where he has guided both novice and expert fishing hopefuls but also about urban settings such as the City of Oakland Park through which the natural Cherry Creek tributary runs. He considers this the “most pristine in-town waterway in all of South Florida.” Who knew. This is a must-read for anglers who call South Florida home. It may also serve as an angler’s primer for those who live near water in other parts of the state or the country. He writes “current is what triggers the action” and it’s the “wave action that serves as catalyst for shoreline fishing.” Basics for all. Kantner reveals where the places are, how to get there, where to park, what to bring, the species that inhabit each, what time to catch them and how. His book is also a trove of information about flies, lures, and rigging. There’s something for everyone who loves South Florida in this guide. It’s well-written, informative, chock full of beautiful photos and more than anything, fascinating.

This book contains a lot of good information, and I hesitate to give it only ...
This book contains a lot of good information, and I hesitate to give it only 2 stars. Still there is a major flaw in how it is sold. While it is supposed to cover South Florida, it almost completely neglects Southwest Florida. Buyers beware if that is your area of interest. Also, some of the information does not at all square with my own experience in Southwest FL, albeit as a tourist. Of course, I'm sure what he says is accurate for the East Coast, which is the focus of his saltwater coverage. A couple of other issues - first, it could do with some professional editing. In places I couldn't understand what he was saying, largely due to ambiguous language. Also, his fly tying descriptions are just not adequate even for someone with a lot of experience. For example, just adding something like "tied in with a dubbing loop" could go a long way to helping others duplicate the flies. In summary, if you are fishing the Miami-Dade-Ft. Lauderdale and Alligator Alley area, buy the book. If your focus is Southwest FL, spend your money in a shop and get your information from them or put it towards hiring a guide.
