Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory

Gary Gitchell-Inspector Clouseau or John Burge??? Let the Viewer Decide!
I remember how upset I was at learning of these 3 boys murders, at home with my new baby in May 93, one of which shared my own birthday. And how I would never watch the HBO docus because the newspapers articles alone made me so angry. 25+ years later, I decided to and am very glad. All the AR cops, esp. Gitchell should be so ashamed! Was this their first murder investigation? Talk about perpetuating small town, rural, southern American res-neck stero-typing! They keep talking about the 'crime scene'. What crime scene? YOU NEVER FOUND THE CRIME SCENE YOU MORONS! YOU FOUND THE BODY DUMP!!! Where did this judge and these prosecutors get their law degrees? Or does AR not have to abide by Federal laws? How is it legal for the trial judge to hear the appeal on his own case? I always thought LA & MS & CHI were the most corrupt places in this country but I forgot about the AR regime. Thanks, HBO for showing the rest of the world that there are 'legal' climates such as this; just how the Clintons got away with so much as well!!!

What can happen when you have a lousy trial judge.
I've watched the HBO documentaries about the WM3 a couple of times. Unfortunately, the one actor in the legal process who could have insured a fair trial, free of prejudice, was the trial judge. He was not up to the task. Trial judges are supposed to be impartial. Clearly, he was not. He permitted the State to put on evidence that was not only outrageously prejudicial to the defendants but had no real probative value. The West Memphis police most likely allowed the real murderer to go free due to laziness and incompetence. It is heartbreaking to imagine the hell the three little boys endured. What a shame.

As important to watch as To Kill a Mockingbird - a true version of this cautionary tale.
Justice is swift when emotions rule, and painfully slow when men have to humble themselves.Possible spoiler belowdecksThree boys will go down in history as enduring a long drawn out witch hunt, and three as victims, who never got justice. Six primary victims, countless secondary victims; and a brutal scar on our justice system. The police, prosecutors, Judge (and some jury members), will go down in history as corrupt, and severely lacking in morals, humility, courage, the spirit of justice, and ....as having so little knowledge of history.Confirmation bias, hysteria, and an ability for people to put reason above emotions (most shockingly the ones trained to do so) must be kept in check if the system is to work.I hope the legacies these people leave behind can be used as lessons to make America a consistently fair and equitable place to live - where nothing like this ever happens again.

3 twice convicted triple child murderers
Echols, Misskelley and Baldwin are each twice convicted triple child murderers...PERIOD24 Jurors heard ALL of the evidence, and unanimously voted GUILTY across the board. 18 years later, the three convicted triple child murders each entered an Alford guilty plea. I find it incredibly sad that so many people let a one sided "documentary" series make up their minds for them. These child killers are out of prison because of a powerful PR campaign (biased "documentaries" & "celebrity" backing) as well as massive fund raising efforts that have brought in upwards of 20 million dollars. Wake up people!!

Terrible injustice
On the one hand, this documentary saved these boys (the West Memphis 3) lives, and on the other hand, depressed an entire nation because of the injustice done to them at this "witch hunt" in AK.The state saved their own skin big time, by offering the "Alford Plea". There was no way a conviction would of been upheld had it gone for a second trial.Definitely watch all 3 videos of Paradise Lost.

It could happen to you.
I just watched all three Paradise Lost and I feel that the justice system missed the boat. It looks like those officers who investigated this case wanted to have a win and the best they could do is pick out some kids that wear black so that it would be easy to throw them to the lions instead of doing some good investigative work. Lets face it, over all, people are very gullible. Look at what they did to the witches in Salem. That is what this looks like. They convicted those kids because they wore black not because they killed those children. I wonder who killed those children? There was one kid that said that one of those kids confessed to him that he killed those kids.

No crime scene, or convicted killers for this cold case
I was really hoping they would have gotten a clairvoyant on this case!!! why not? that would have helped the cold case people to find the actual crime scene etc. All the money they raised got the forensic guys, but of course we all want to know who the real killers ARE and WHAT ACTUALLY OCCURRED. They really need to contact a psychic person and solve this awful mystery as to whodunit.I enjoyed Mark Byers this whole series. Such entertainment made me smile, and shake my head at the same time. For a while there his tendencies of rage and forgetfulness did make him appear guilty. It was great to see him come around to looking at the evidence again and humbly forgive his previous hate, and convictions.

You Will Never Want To Set Foot in Arkansas After You Watch This Film
The film shows what it took to get these three men out of jail and it was still not a full exoneration. One takeaway you will get from this documentary - don't ever set foot in West Memphis, Arkansas if you do not live there. If you do, you risk breathing wrong, then being labeled a satanist for not breathing the right way, and then getting convicted for a crime you didn't commit. Might as well stay out of the state altogether, really. The state didn't want to admit there was any wrongdoing with this case. So instead of taking the high road and admitting they were mistaken, they took a path of vengeance. Shame on the elected officials of the law in the state of Arkansas for holding their self-righteous noses in the air and not letting obviously innocent men go completely free. Makes me sick.

Disturbing
I started watching this video and only managed to get through the first 15 minutes. It showed repeated and extensive footage of the dead, naked and mutilated children. Not sure if it is only because I am a parent, but I have two young boys and had to turn it off as it upset me greatly. Not sure why they would show so much.

A Must See!!
I have followed this case from almost the beginning. I truly believe that these 3 young men were wrongly convicted.A definite injustice in American history. I highly recommend this and the other two documentaries.
