Excellent and comprehensive
This is one of those lovely books that manages to be both academically excellent, and a fascinating read. It is a description of traditional clothes and jewellery worn by the various tribal and social groups in Rajasthan; from simple working people and nomads, to the families of Rajas. It is a region particularly rich in textile culture and skill. Each group has its own distinctive costume which identifies the wearer. Some garments are cut and sewn, others draped. Many are beautifully decorated with embroidery. There is a dazzling variety of jewellery for women and for men. Dr. Bhandari details the cultural significance of the items she describes - which ornaments and clothing are appropriate to a single girl; which denote that the wearer is a married woman; or the mother of a son; or a widow. There is a description of how different styles of dhoti are tied, and a series of pattern diagrams at the back for many of the tailored garments described. I imagine these would be very useful to fashion and textile students. The whole book is well illustrated with colourful photographs, which are well annotated. Anyone with an interest in Indian textiles and culture can't fail to be delighted with this book.
