First Love

Great movie about a boxer that is told he has an inoperable brain tumor and the girl he helps. The mobsters and gangsters being tricked by a low level member with a fool proof plan that has the girl being the fall gal.

A young boxer has the worst night of his life. After rescuing a girl from a suspicious man. Leo finds himself right in the middle of a gang war between the Yakuza and Triads. One bad night awaits this unlikely hero.

Obviously made on the cheap, "First Love" mainly takes place in the street and in deserted stores. If anything, it proves a film doesn't need a lot of expensive locations to succeed. The story is about a couple of innocents caught up in a Yakuza war between rival gangs. The girl has been kept as a kind of slave to redeem her father's debt to the Yakuza. The boy is a young boxer who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and feels he has nothing to lose, so he's determined to save her. There's a tinge of humor to the whole thing and some surprising cinematic techniques. The couple's sweetness contrasts with the chilling gang personalities. All of Miike's films are violent, but if you can handle the blood, they're brilliantly done, plus the cast is excellent. I took away one star because of the excessive violence, but if you don't mind violence, you can give it all five stars. I did have trouble distinguishing between some of the female characters, who were all about the same height with similar hair and clothing, but no problems other than that.

Think “Pulp Fiction” meets “Fargo” meets any Elmore Leonard novel, throw in some Yakuza and some triads, and you’re in the ballparkDelightfully inventive! I kept laughing in sheer pleasure at the inventiveness and absurdity of the situations, which were played straight.One of the my favorite movies of the ones I have seen this year!

Enjoyable movie with a lot of action and violence with some humor as well. It's something that I would definitely watch again and glad to have in my collection.The two main characters were just ok but I felt like the rest of the cast were the real stars of this movie. They were varied and interesting. As well as funny since nothing seemed to go right for any of them. The best character in the movie for me by far is the girl you see on the cover, she was just awesome.This movie does come with a slipcover.

This is a fast paced adult oriented bloody action adventure directed by a master craftsman.Miike is amazing. His drive and creativity is unstoppable. The man has been non stop making videos and films since the early 90's. Every year 2-5 films! I do not know any other director on earth that has done something like this.As for this movie he does not disappoint. Yakuza, blood, gore, violence with Miike's traditional comical twist. Add in that dash of creative fantasy out of left field to keep you on your toes and we have yet another Miike classic. Heroic adventure with a happy ending. Dramatic story that touches on some pretty heavy issues but it still manages to not take itself too seriously.

If I had to describe this film, it is a mix between a Tarantino film and a Guy Richie film. I know Tarantino borrowed a lot from Japanese cinema so I take pause in comparing it to one of his films but you can tell there is a great attempt of a Japanese director trying to reach across the aisle and appeal to a western audience. The strong points in this movie are the characters and they are fleshed out well. If you are curious of stepping into the world of "non-Hollywood" films, this is a good starting point. I have friends who said they dont watch foreign films but after they saw this, they are now seeing that other countries make good films.

It was a very nice watch of action, dark humor, caricatures and just really pleasant to watch characters each interacting as they get swirled together. I baseline rate movies based on how good they for their genre, and if I feel satisfied they fulfilled their goal when the credits role. This rates five for Japanese style action, with quirky humor and characters, and left me satisfied.

Man what a wild ride this movie was omg!!! It's funny, has action, is romantic, you name it, it has it!I'd watch it again for sure... it's very unpredictable and super entertaining.10/10!!!

北米版Blu-rayですが普通に見れました。内容は申し分ないてすね、洋画や韓国映画並みに面白い。購入して損無し！日本版はなぜかDVDしかなく、北米版はBlu-rayでしかも値段が安いです。

A rare misfire by one of the most interesting auteurs (Takashi Miike) on the planet. Can't wait until he returns to form!
