The Nature of Prejudice: 25th Anniversary Edition

Still the best read to lose a racist attitude
I first read this in college (late 60's and early 70's) at the time of Watts and Wilmington, DE riots. The treatments on the Nazi mindset was still relevant. My family schooled me to be a fine racist and I wanted to break from that mold. With the emergence of Black Lives Matter, I felt I had to review my attitudes again and understand the attitudes and beliefs of the White Supremist, skin heads, Ultra-right and some Evangelical Christians. I am even better informed now about myself and others and the formation of destructive attitudes and acts of violence. READ IT, it matters and has no political agenda. - A 70 year old white man who is still trying to learn.

I read this for my son
Jesse Jackson and his son make me sick! I don't agree with them and how they use politics to hurt African Americans. They oppress them. They don't advance their cause. They and others like them, pro-long the racial divide between blacks and whites and other races in our country. It makes me angry. I personally have never been accosted nor been given a problem by a single member of any minority race.It is not 1962 '72 or '82. My son was born in 2011 and I saw the book the Nature of Prejudice and bought it on the spot. I wanted to know where everyone's prejudice comes from. Mine included. I will eradicate it from my home. I don't want my son affected as he is and always will be from a different era and deserves his own choices. For that reason alone, I strongly recommend this book. The only reason I did not give it a five is because it was written in 1954.Mr. Alport passed away in the early 1980's but his book should be a best seller today. No -- I will never run for public office.Yes-- a company should still want to hire me for trying to be a better person.

The Authoritative Work on the Topic of Prejudice
The delivery was very fast and product in excellent shape. Yes, a classic and though outdated with examples, Gordon Allport's sociological and psychological research and insights say it all. However, chapter 13, 'Theories of Prejudice' and chapter 16, 'The Effect of Contact' are most appropriate lessons for today. It has been said, this is the authoritative work on the topic and I believe it is true.

Very good read
This book was purchased for a graduate class of mine. It is very interesting, appealing, and teaches so much on social issues revolving racism. I was intrigued the entire time, while angered at the social injustices mentioned. I highly recommend this book.

A great book that truly explains
Prejudice needs to be explained and this book does that.

This is really good book.
I first heard about Gordon W Allport in a Theories of Personality class I recently took. However, it was on the internet where I discovered book The Nature of Prejudice. I haven't finish reading all of the book so far, what I have read though has been very interesting; I cannot wait until I read the whole book.

A very prejudiced read, not a feelgood book
I'm not one who shocks easily but this book was just wow. You can feel how it was written in the 1950's, and it should've stayed there. Honestly, I don't think it has anything to give to the modern reader but shock value. Had to read this for a course and in the essay/book report I did not have one good thing to say about the book overall or the dated theories within. If one wishes to experience prejudice in the 1950's firsthand, for example from a historical viewpoint, then by all means read it. Otherwise, avoid this book like the plague. A very prejudiced and racist view from an icon of personality psychology.

all time classic
well written, good read; enjoyable and highly educative, only qualms is in many examples of prejudice the author cites jews and black peoples experience in north america; understandable as he writes mainly about prejudice in that society against minority groups; could have loved to see a wide range of examples of prejudice against minority groups in other parts of the world.

Recommended
Whilst some of the language and examples are deeply rooted in the time when this book was written and might jar with a modern reader, this is still an exceptional book.
