Required College Text for HRT211 at MSU
I bought it for my Landscaping Plants I class at MSU. It's very thick, but so far very informational. I was assured by my instructors that if I finish my program and stay within this career path, it will become my consant companion. I plan to get every penny I paid for it back out of it in the future. I bought the hardcover. It would be a pain trying not to bend the pages of a paperback that was as big as this book.

Indispensable guide to woody plants for the serious gardener
Comprehensive and in-depth information with a personal touch and occasional flashes of humor, a faculty needed by every gardener or landscaper. Michael Dirr has written the reference book every serious planter of trees, shrubs, and woody vines will need. Line drawings are precise and far more useful for identification of woody species than a typical color photo. My only objection: Drawings do not include flowers and fruits, which often offer obvious clues for mystery cultivars.

THE Horticulture Bible!
This thorough reference belongs on the bookshelf of every horticulture student, garden professional and serious home gardener. Not familiar with a shrub or other woody ornamental? Dirr provides the details from identification characteristics, growth rate, disease problems, uses in the landscape, methods of propagation, flowers, fruit, site preferences, and more. A beginning gardener might criticize this book for its scientific perspective, an educated gardener will treasure this reference manual for the wealth of information it provides.
