Q: Is this coat warm enough for New York in December?

Yes. It is warm enough for Michigan winters so I believe it would definitely be warm enough in New York also. I was born in Buffalo and lived in Albany area for about 12 years and I believe this coat would be great for either of these areas. Love the coat and it is machine washable.

Q: does this coat have an inside security pocket? and how long is it?

The coat reaches almost to my knees. I am short, but this coat is meant to cover the thighs as far as I can tell, even if you are taller than I am. It does have inside pockets, although I don't know if they could be described a security pockets. However, if you have the coat zipped up, it would be very difficult for someone to get to items kept in the pockets.
