Great "gateway" board game
Boomtown is a fun game with some light strategy elements (focusing mainly on bidding and odds) that is a wonderful step up from classic board games like Monopoly without being overwhelming to new players. It introduces a bidding mechanic and gives enough strategic options so as there are few "obvious" correct and incorrect choices while still being an approachable game.Every turn, cards are turned over and players bid to be the first to pick from the cards. If you win, you pay your bid to the person on your left (who by default is getting the last pick). They take half of that money and pass the rest to their left, that person takes half and passes again, etc. That makes getting an early pick less financially advantageous as having a late pick, though obviously you can select a better card. The theme of the game is the gold rush, and there are several ways to win. You can buy "mines" which basically pay a certain amount of money out when a specific number is rolled on the die (which is rolled once every round). This makes mines that pay out on rolls of 7 significantly more valuable than ones that pay out on a 12. However, the payout on 12's is usually higher and the mines come in different colors. Having the most of one color mine has its own advantages, so it isn't always in your best interest to take the "best" mine. There are also interactive cards that affect other players, though very few that actually "attack" specific players. I have NOT played a game of Boomtown where someone felt singled out or targeted, which I think is a great thing to say about any game. All in all, a fun, reasonably straightforward game with some light strategic elements. A wonderful game for any collection, a good travel game, and an excellent "gaetway" game for folks not as familiar with the robust world of board games.

Excellent game. Great for kids and parents
Boomtown is a great bidding style game. Each round you bid for the right to choose a card first. The winning bidder passes money to the right and players choose their best value card from him to the left. The cards have different values to each player based on what they already have and what they are trying to do and what other players have. The goal is to have the most money. Each turn you have very interesting decisions to make. Sometimes you want to bluff other players by bidding just high enough that they are still willing to pay for it or other times you'll lay down all your gold to ensure that you get the card you want. There are elements of Settlers of Catan, poker and Monopoly in this game.We have played it with an 8 year old and he loves it.

Great game for pretty much anyone!
This is another game by Bruno. If you liked this game I highly recommend Citadels, which is another card based board game.As previous reviewers noted, this game has a round of betting. The purpose of the betting is to decide who gets first selection of the choice properties. The best selection is based on probability. What is the likelihood that one of the properties under debate will actually pay out. I have yet to play with someone that didn't enjoy it. It was a great price, great game, and great fun.

Gold!!!
This game is alright. The rule book is not the best and leaves a couple things unanswered. The game however is fun over all and is good for a decent 45 minute sit down with friends. To make the game great though you should have the show Gold Rush playing in the background and come to the table with ridiculous mining gear and equipment. Soon you'll be mumbling gold to yourself and the crazy gold miner from within will take over and you will inevitably win the game.
