The real downside is that you need more than two
Let me start off by saying you need more than two of these dryer balls to derive the benefit .. I currently use six. (This, if anything, is what we can take the manufacturer to task about, and what seems to be a big factor when people give the product a low rating.)Some people mention tennis balls as an alternative. While tennis balls would probably give you the same fluffing effect as this product, lifting the clothes to allow the dryer's heat to do its work more quickly, the nubby surface of the dryer balls gives the added benefit of lightly abrading the surface of the clothing as they bounce around. This does indeed make the clothes softer. It's the same principle as stone-washing, which of course gives a softer hand to any fabric. While the first two dryer balls I bought didn't seem to do much, I noticed a difference in the softness of my laundry the first time I dried a load with six of them. I'd been wondering why, after just their first washing, my expensive designer clothes never felt quite the same as the day I bought them. These dryer balls provided me with a big part of my answer. If the manufacturer had packed them in sets of six instead of two, I think the overall rating here would have been a bit higher.

They worked as advertised
I purchased the 2 ball pack and my dryer is medium/large sized and they do exactly as they say. Items come out fluffier, dryer and full bodied vs clumpy or slumping after a dry. I would recommend the 4 ball pack, I'm purchasing another 2. If you see the image I uploaded, they are soft, and can be squeezed. Yet you do have to apply pressure. You can also see from the image 2 are about one hand length. I feel that 4 would be better for the dry and heavier items. I have used these on a comforter that is queen size and they work, but I feel that 4 balls would do a better job than 2 overall. Have zero complaints and happy with the purchase. Also, they are not as heavy as a tennis ball. Its slightly smaller but not as heavy, yet maintain its structure for tumbling.

Leaves black lines on clothes
Do not buy this product! The balls left inch long dark thin lines visible on my light colored clothing. The tips of the points on the balls loose their blue coating and the points underneath the blue coating marks clothes while drying.I have ruined several articles of clothing since I cannot get the marks out with special pre- wash treatment, detergent poured directly on the marks, or stain release products.By the time I realized what was causing the marks on my clothes, the return time for Amazon was passed. I emailed the company just to get my money back - not for compensation for the couple hundred dollars of clothes ruined - and got no response. I then called the company asking for a refund and they told me the department I needed was on vacation for a week and to call back. I called back and got no response. I emailed and received a return email saying they were not a store and could not refund money. I emailed back and suggested a different product they could send me in its place for the same amount of money and got no response.I don’t really care about the $7.00. I care about the clothes that were ruined and wanted them to recognize the problem with their product

Broke after 2 uses.
These broke after 2 uses. Not only that, but it left tiny little fragments of plastic in my laundry that I then had to clean out. So overpriced for something so ineffective and low in quality
