a real shaving tool
OLD SCHOOL SHAVE at the best. Take take of the product, you will hand it down for generations. Close. And takes time to learn a real barber shave. HA...or close to.

Great Razor for a great price
I just love all Merkur Razors. I actually purchased this razor for the head to use on another handle. I have a very stout handle I acquired from Maggard Razors. I bought the MR8 handle with their least aggressive head. I loved the handle, but the head was just a bit too aggressive for my skin. The head wasn't like the Merkur 34C HD (Heavy Duty), which is my favorite razor and it is not aggressive for my sensitive skin.Someone gave me great advice to look for a Vintage Gillette Tech double edge razor head because it not that aggressive and inexpensive. So I started looking, but in the back of my mind I had some concerns. Pricing, aggressiveness and how sanitary will it be. It's not like I did not trust the person but I knew I loved my Merkur and a used head was a little worrisome because I needed to find out how to completely sterilize it, plus the pricing of the Vintage heads were around $20, so I thought why not look for a Merkur head because I have read that Merkur uses the 34C head on many models. It was really hard to find the Merkur head alone, but then I a thought I should try a three piece that may have the same head as the 34C and I believe I found it with the C42. It is very hard to confirm my findings, about the C42 and the 34C HD heads to be the exact same. Many people said it is the same, but it feels a little different, but damn close.Anyway, the Merkur 34C HD as great as it is, it is a two piece razor, which means you are kind of stuck with that handle and cannot take the head to another handle. Here comes the C42, which at the price is an incredible bargain. It is very easy to say for beginners in Double Edge shaving try the Merkur 34C HD and you would not be wrong in any way. The price ranges anywhere from $29 to $60, which is not bad for a starter (Go shopping because it fluctuates, I got it for just under $30 on Amazon). If you are even on a tighter budget you cannot go wrong with the Merkur C42, which I landed for just over $22 from Amazon.I hope this helps out someone.

Slippery
I am a woman that uses a safety razor, because for the cost of 100 razor blades I can only get about 4 women's razors! The pink tax is a real thing people! That being said, I have been trying to find the "perfect" safety razor. THIS one is both my favorite and my least favorite. Let me explainThe positive is that the angle of the blade is AMAZING. I have YET to cut myself with this razor. The shave it provides is smooth and easy. A couple of passes, and my legs feel like a brand new baby's butt. The negative is that the handle is not nearly heavy enough. It is also a tad too short, and it's SLIPPERY as hell.I'm making it work, but am seriously considering finding a way to add some weight to the handle, and scratching it up or something, so my wet hands don't slip on the handle any more.

A Very Useful Classic
I had originally purchased this model just to add to my collection, but after trying it I was surprised at what a great shave it provided. The handle is a bit short and slippery for me, but I love the heft of it as well as the classic art deco design. With any stainless or chrome plated safety razor, you have to take care of it, which means loosening the head, rinsing it clean of soap and stubble, and drying it off before you store it wherever. Nothing will wreck the finish on a razor like mineral deposits from water. Additionally, you don't have to tighten the hell out of them when replacing the blade which I suspect is the cause for a lot of cap screw breakage.

Excellent razor! 6 Months in and still loving it!
I absolutely love this razor.I had been using a Van der Hagen double edge safety razor for a few years, but eventually the opening mechanism got all rusty and it became nearly impossible to change blades. (Not to mention it takes proprietary size blades, and I had noticed that theirs had definitely decreased in quality/sharpness over time, so my shaves had become painful, bloody affairs even with a fresh blade.)So I was looking at all the available Merkur models and was a little confused about different features available between them, but this one was attractive and well rated so I just pulled the trigger on it.I have been using it for maybe half a year now and been very pleased. The nice polished rounded top feels so good against my skin, and it gives me a very close shave. I bought a variety sampler pack of different razor blade brands to try which ones work best for me, and honestly they’ve all been great using this Merkur. Hard for me to say which blades I prefer, as this handle always makes my shave comfortable so I barely think about it while I’m shaving.

Not Very Aggressive when paired with Feather- Appreciated
A well built product with a simple design. In a lot of ways I agree that you get what you pay for, but they definitely held up their end of the bargain with integrity and made a simple product that seems to be made well. The short handle took some getting used to just in the way of balance, but in truth I wasn’t using most of the handle on my old Safety razor anyway. Very very mild shave. Not aggressive at all with feather blades- I wasn’t expecting to like that so much.
