Removing tartar & plaque!
I tried dental cleaning chews, bones for dogs, products you sprinkle on top their food, and liquids you add to their drinking water ever since he was a puppy (he is 2 1/2 years old now) with no success. I purchased this toothpaste and I have to report, after only 2 brushings, I notice improvement in tarter removal on my Goldendoodle's teeth. I had previously tried an enzymatic toothpaste with no improvement. I brush his teeth using a silicone ribbed finger swab. He's not real fond of having his teeth brushed, but tolerates it. This toothpaste is in a gel form and is odorless and unflavored. My dog licks his mouth and wags his tail after I brush his teeth so he must not find the gel offensive in smell or taste. He still has some tan tartar buildup on his right upper molars I am hoping it will continue to break down. (Only been using this a week.) If not, he will get a dental cleaning, but I will definitely continue to use this toothpaste!

Good product - does have a slight chlorine odor
I have used Oxyfresh brand dental products for my cat since I adopted him at the age of 6 months. I had previously only been using the liquid, not as water additive as it is marketed, but to apply directly to his teeth and gums using a toothbrush and small sprayer. It kept his mouth in good health, as the vet commented at our most recent exam, so I decided to purchase the gel as well.I do use this with a toothbrush. He has been getting his teeth brushed since he was little and I prefer it to having him chew on my finger with his super-sharp teeth. So far so good. I fully anticipate it will work just as well for his oral health. I have yet to use it on a wound, but won't hesitate to do so if he gets in any more fights. The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is it does have a minor odor, despite the statement that it is odorless. It smells mildly of bleach. After all, chlorine is a component both in bleach and in Oxyfresh. The active ingredient in this is chlorine dioxide (their patented Oxygene ingredient). The liquid does not have any odor, despite also containing Oxygene.I do have an unusually sensitive sense of smell, and still the aroma of this gel is just noticeable so it is quite faint. I don't find it offensive but then I am one of those freaks who loves the smell of bleach and used to like going to the public pool because of the extra chlorine they added. On the plus side, the ingredients say the Oxygene is "stabilized chlorine dioxide". Any chlorine in it does seem to be stable because if you get any of this gel on your clothes, it does not stain or fade as it would as soon as bleach touched it.

This product works!
My dog was a rescue. Her teeth were already bad. I bought this product along with a dog dental ket and regularly did her teeth. Soon the tatar and Plaque just started to fall off. I will say it takes patience on your part and with time it works. This is not an overnight miracle. You need the dogs cooperation as well. If your dog doesn't like this treatment you should consider a vet to do the job. It is also not a replacement for a regular vet check up. But with persistence and patience it great for in between vet visits.

My Cats Hate The Taste
This was bought for my two cats in an effort to prevent any dental diseases or tartar buildup. However, they absolutely hated the taste of this. I had to hold them down and rub the toothpaste around their teeth while they tried to spit it out. My cats are very friendly and gentle but when it came time to brush their teeth, they tried as hard as they could to get away. To be clear, I can shove my finger around their mouth and rub their gum line and they just sit there. Same with a tooth brush. It isn't the brushing that bothers them, it's the toothpaste.About the toothpaste itself, it has a chemically smell (not bad but not something a cat would like in my opinion) and it is a clear gel. It is fairly easy to use, just rub it on your cat's teeth with your clean finger or a clean toothbrush. Preparing the cat to get their teeth brushed is the hardest and most time-consuming part. It takes weeks or even months of getting used to fingers/brushes in their mouth and the toothpaste's taste. When I used it, my cats breath did change to smell like the gel. It has not made my cats sick in the two-three months that I have used it so that is good.I did end up buying another toothpaste and they don't mind the taste of that so much so I will not be buying this again. If you have a cat, this might not be the best product for them because of the taste. I wasn't able to return it because the window to return it closed but if your cat doesn't like it, don't wait to see if they get used to it. Try to return it and buy another toothpaste for them.

Recommended by my dog’s Veterinary Dentist
I’m reviewing the gel, not the toothpaste which is why I gave only 4 stars for flavor. I don’t think that it has a flavor (that’s not a negative). I have a young dog with hereditary gum disease. This gel was recommended by my dog’s Veterinary Dentist, a board certified dental specialist. He prescribed using the gel after her daily brushing, when teeth are newly cleaned. The gel then is applied and the extra action of the Oxyfresh gel helps fight the bacteria at the gum line. It is very simple to apply: working on 2 teeth at a time, I put a small amount on my index finger and rub it gently into the area where tooth meets gum. No need to use big globs of gel; you will quickly learn to be conservative and not waste product. My dog is used to having her teeth brushed and so was very cooperative when I started applying the gel as well. She is neutral about the taste, does not pull away but also doesn’t act like she wants to eat it right out of the tube. No noticeable scent. Helpful hint: keep the tube standing on end (cap down) so the gel collects at the opening. It can be a little tricky to get the right amount dispensed, as the tube is not as flexible as a normal toothpaste tube which responds to squeezing, bending or whatever. Because of this, I always feel that the last remnants of product in any tube kind of go to waste. Anyway, I definitely recommend this product and I use it on my other dogs, who do not have dental problems.
