Day Hiking South Cascades (Done in a Day) Paperback – May 8, 2007

The book is one of a whole series of “day hiking” books put out by the Mountaineers Books. They are among the very best guidebooks for those looking for solid, reliable information on hikes that can be accomplished in a day.The book cover 125 hikes divided into nine areas --The White Pass Corridor/Cowlitz River Valley, Dark Divide/Cispus Area, the Lewis River Region, the Goat Rocks Region, the Mount Adams Area, Indian Heaven/Trapper Creek Region, Siouxon/Silver Star Area, Mt. St. Helens Area, and the Columbia River Gorge Area. For each hike, it gives the difficulty, distance, elevation and height gain, and the season when the hike is possible. The last is particularly important given the wide range of altitudes. A “quick guide” in the front helps in picking out hikes of particular interest from bird watching and waterfalls, to berry picking and finding solitude. Equally useful are the clear directions and maps.

This book is an excellent resource for many of the good day hikes in the area. As with all these types of books, the condition of any of the trails may change from when it was written, as well as the access. If possible, check with the Forest Service or plan a secondary hike in the case that your first choice isn't available.My son continues to find new places to put our feet on the days we have to hike and this book has given him "new" places to discover!

I use this book SO much! It has an awesome section that pulls out certain trails that are great for particular adventures. Maps of the area and descriptions of what you will find on the trail. I particularly like the topographic tidbits that help you to understand more about elevation gain and highest point reached. I'll be buying more of these!

The stunning color plates in the front lead you into very detailed trail information. The "Quick Guide to Hikes" lists are broken down headings like "Waterfall Hikes", "Best Hikes to pick berries" or "Best Hikes for Birdwatching" fabulously detailed information! I find all Mountaineers hiking books filled with succinct information maps, trail ratings & important information necessary to hike safely.

Small in size but packed with good info. I found the hike that we were looking for too.

This book gives you many different trail options, from a gentle walk to much more strenuous and challenging hikes. The instructions are clear, with good summaries of distances/elevation gain. It is also small enough to easily fit in a day hiking bag. Would thoroughly recommend!

This book was great. It includes a lot of information about hikes in the area. I like how it rates the difficulty and how there is a list at the front of the book that quickly shows some of the important information about the hikes.
