How to Serve: In Simple, Solemn and Pontifical Functions

After watching altar server videos on YouTube to learn how to serve the Low Mass, I picked up this book and fell in love with the descriptions and depth these provide for all sorts of scenarios in serving the TLM. Even if you are serving the Novus Ordo Mass (which the vast majority of people are) several of the disciplines described in this book would be appropriate and commendable to incorporate into your serving repertoire. For example, excellent instruction on how to use the "snuffer" to light and extinguish candles, or how to ring the bells (it was interesting to me that the Archbishop who signed off on this book preferred a simple "school bell" to the multiple bells usually seen in Catholic Churches for the "Sanctus Bells"; after serving with both kinds, I think the singular bell is more modest and much easier to control errant rings)Hoping to be adept enough with these descriptions to one day serve a Missa Cantata or a Solemn High Mass! Would 100% recommend this to anyone desiring to seriously improve and hone their serving skills!

Excellent way to be attentive to what's going on in the Traditional Mass even if you don't intend to serve. Gives a pretty clear idea of the expectation for all of us, not just Servers. Also, it's a useful way to learn things that Altar Servers know and you don't.

This publication has a lot of information about the Tridentine Mass and it explains how an why things are done in the old Mass compared to the Protestant version of the Mass in common use today. I bought this for a friend as he wanted more information than I could provide. ~Bill

This book is the best tool I have found for helping my sons practice their responses and understand their roles as altar boys. They are 8 and 10, and just beginning to serve, but this book helps us reinforce the lessons they learn from the the guild.

Great book for any server of the extraordinary form. It goes into much detail, even as far as what types of surplices are acceptable. I recommend for any person who would like a handbook on the finer details of serving at the Lord's altar.
