Invisible Residents: The Reality of Underwater UFOs

An Extremely Silly Saucer Book
Ivan T. Sanderson (1911- 1973) was a Scottish zoologist who quickly became enamored with a wide variety of pseudoscientific bandwagons. In the late 1950s and 1960, he wrote a series of thirteen articles for _Fantastic Universe_-- nine on U.F.O.s (by which Sanderson meant "flying saucers") and four on the Abominable Snowman (which Sanderson also believed in). Only one of these essays was reprinted in book form. But they later provided the raw material for several sensational books.Several reviewers have complained that Sanderson's writing was bad. Here I must disagree. Sanderson was actually a fairly competent writer who presented his material in a passably smooth style. It is not Sanderson's _style_ that I find objectionable; it is his _content_.Sanderson's _Invisible Residents: The Reality of Underwater UFOs_ (1970) argues that we are being inundated with flying saucers. But not from outer space. They are instead coming from a secret race related to the Atlantans who are hiding in underground caverns. This race has undersea bases from which they launch these mysterious and menacing saucers which Sanderson labels Underwater Submersible Objects (USOs). I have never read such twaddle since the UFO writings of Richard S. Shaver back in the 1940s.Naturally, Sanderson offers "proof" or "evidence" to support his fantastic claims. But, as we shall see, this evidence all comes to naught. One piece of evidence that Sanderson dwells upon is the large numbers of missing persons. He cites Charles Fort's account of missing persons like Ambrose Bierce and Judge Crater. He then states numbers of missing people in chapter eight amounts to a huge total: "You will find that we have 1,299 in this area alone" (218). Sanderson then assumes that the total "must run into the thousands" (218). From there, he implies that a large percentage of these are probably USO kidnappings. Leaving aside the questionable accuracy of Sanderson's estimation of numbers, there are numerous other reasons why people go missing: They are victims of murder, they may be brain injured or dementia people who have wandered from home, they may be women fleeing from domestic violence, they may be juvenile runaways, they may be people who chose to live "under the radar". There are dozens of reasons why people may disappear that have nothing to do with USOs. The notion that we are being menaced by aliens is highly questionable.Another similar instance of faulty logic is Sanderson's treatment of missing ships at sea. He quotes from Vincent Gaddis' (1965) book on mysteries at sea, referring to classic cases like that of the _Marie Celeste_. Sanderson then cites large total numbers of ships lost at sea and implies that many of them were the victims of USO attacks. But there are many reasons why a ship may be declared missing. Some may be victims of wartime hostilities, some may be lost from storms or hurricanes, some may capsize because they were loaded with too much cargo, and a few may be victims of tidal waves or icebergs. During the eruption of Krakatoa, there were several ships that were literally "blown out of the ocean" (Winchester, 2004, 218-258). Some ships that were once declared lost at sea have been rediscovered many years later as derelicts. The inference that most ships missing at sea are lost because of nefarious saucer activity is really a bit of a stretch.A third discussion by Sanderson is an anticipation of the "ancient astronauts" theme. He discusses a gold Columbian artifact over a thousand years old. Sanderson refers to it as a "subaquaplane" because it resembles in shape a modern fighter plane. From this, Sanderson concludes that it is positive proof that the ancient Incas had contact with saucer people in ancient times. He suspects that the artifact might be a model of a USO. Once again, this logic is quite a stretch.Sanderson does a bit better with his chapter on underwater ocean lights, or "the wheels of Poseidon". They are actually well-observed (though not clearly understood) phenomena. Sanderson discusses several possible causes of the lights, but he ultimately declares that they are a "mystery". He hints (but does not insist) that they might be connected with undersea saucers. It has been over fifty years since the initial publication of _Invisible Residents_. In all of that time, there has been no scrap of proof supporting the claim that U.S.O.s are rising out of the ocean to wreak havok upon us. Our knowledge of science has greatly increased since 1970. So has our knowledge of archeology, geography, and mythology. Sanderson's simplistic "ancient astronauts" interpretation of other cultures just doesn't hold water. _Invisible Residents_ was a nonsensical book when it was first published. It has not improved with the passage of time._References_: Fort, Charles. _Lo!_ Radford, VA: Wilder Publications, 1931.Gaddis, Vincent. _Invisible Horizons: Strange Mysteries of the High Seas-- Astounding Stories That Defy Logic_. Your world view will change when you realize we have a real Captain Nemo entity in the oceans !
It is difficult to form a new world view after you discover the misinformation you were taught in school and by the govt. & academia must be relearned by reading books with true information in them.We share Earth with several unknown races of beings far more advanced than us here now and in the ancient past.Contact has been secret and successful to get technologies to help us catch up some what yet the secrecy impedes our progress scientifically to develop it as all has been hidden from academia as a whole and the public and even most of the military are in the dark to keep the reality under wraps. The big picture includes a secret space program that has taken technologies off Earth to be used only in space and many spaceships are now in need of support so they invented the space force to officially have away to get them resources they need !We have created a breakaway civilization with higher technology than we have on Earth.Protection of Earth from other non human races has been taken over by a Federation of Planets with headquarters inside our Moon.Man is evolving and being guided to a higher level of thinking and being and living .We and all the EBEs are spirit beings here in physical form to learn the hard way to be suitable later for the spirit realm. We all must relearn everything and live to cherish all life and learn love and compassion is the right way to live and be in harmony !

Invisible Residents
The Foreword by David Hatcher Childress describes interesting witness reports of UFOs extracting water from bodies of water for some unknown reason and also includes UFO photographs and drawings. Likewise, the first 45 pages of Invisible Residents by Ivan T. Sanderson describes similarly-interesting USO-UFO events; unfortunately, after that point in the book, which was first published in 1970, Sanderson begins a meandering wondering that dominates the rest of the book and completely loses the direct indications it started with. Many times while considering a supposedly-unusual event, Sanderson uses a large number of words to conclude that it probably was caused by an ordinary experience. In Chapter 10 -- The Disposition Of Anomalies, Sanderson describes his "Vile Vortices" theory of lozenge-shaped areas of strange activity circling the center of the globe, but then after mentioning the known issues of earthquakes, volcanic activity, and heavy mineral deposits, makes the bizarre conclusion of: "It is manifest that we are dealing here with a set of factors that are not, or have not as yet been, correlated with any other physical features of our earth." On pages 124-126, Sanderson lists Disappearances In Northwestern Atlantic of ships and planes from 1840-1969 as a supposed indication of unusual activity. In his time, Sanderson seems to have not known that the loss of people, planes, and ships in various areas is part of typical experience; it is now known that volcanic activity and powerful wave actions are the probable causes of lost ships in the Pacific's Dragon's Triangle, and the loss of House Majority Leader Hale Boggs' plane in Alaska most probably happened because of common storm conditions on that day. In Part Three, Sanderson considers the possibility of underwater beings and cities in the same meandering wondering but does not consider the great physical adversity that such beings would be constantly dealing with and why such beings would choose the harshness of water existence over the ease of land existence. There may be more to learn about in the world's oceans, but Invisible Residents does not provide a meaningful and well-defined view into such possibility.

You might also like which as the title suggests deal with USOs
I read this book in one shot. Very informative and Sanderson though now dead-has done us all a service in alerting us to the possibility that we may be sharing the planet with highly advanced civilizations which live beneath the oceans. You might also like UFOs and USOs: The Mystery of Unidentified Flying Objects in California which as the title suggests deal with USOs. Oldy but good
Interspersed with historical sightings this book will make you think. It doesn't really answer many questions but Sanderson has some unique and interesting theories. It's a book to read and digest on this under published subject and one I will re-read in the future.

a mind- expanding romp through various aquatic mysteries...
This is a crucial book for those fascinated by the Ufo mystery, or Cryptozoology. It is also a classic of Fortean literature. Sanderson who died in 1973 was a naval intelligence officer during WW2 and coined the term "Cryptozoology".The observational premise and the starting point of this book is that by far and away the majority of Ufos are seen near bodies of water, often entering and leaving the water. Sanderson collected hundreds of case studies some of which are tabulated at the back of the book. He emphasises that the hydrosphere covers most of the Earth and that this is, quite uniquely, a "water planet". Sanderson calculates the enormous volume of the hydrosphere where unknown craft may be lurking, compared to the tiny amount of inhabited land. He also points out how narrow are the shipping lanes and air corridors, where sightings originate. There are studies of cases where ships and aircraft have disappeared over the sea, and others where only the humans on board have inexplicably disappeared. Sanderson has collected a good deal of data concerning vortices, and the strange phenomena that they can produce, perhaps the OINTS (Other Intelligences) have mastered their power. The book is full of open- minded speculation, which is the basis for truly scientific hypotheses; he collects all of the data however bizarre it might seem. Perhaps Sanderson does not reveal everything that he knows. He does not rule out the possibility that some of the Ufos, Usos or Uaos as he calls them are produced by humans, he "speculates" that there may be underwater bases hollowed out of undersea mountains and continental masses. Nothing can be ruled out.By the end of the book however, the reader is convinced that Sanderson really does believe in non- human technologically superior OINTS which have created a civilisation under the seas and oceans. He also possesses case studies of Uaos diving into rivers and lakes. This aquatic civilisation or civilisations could have evolved throughout the geological ages or it may have come here from elsewhere in the universe.

Still undecided?
I found this book so confusing and hard work to read, although I did finish it I don't feel it answered any questions, just baffles the reader with more questions.
