Extreme Broadband BDS104H is the bomb
I was having trouble with the stability of my internet connection and tracked it down to an old 4-way splitter. Looking at the cable modem status ([...]), I found that corrected octets were about 1/1000 and there were a non-neglible number of non-correctables. In technical speak, this is 'no bueno'; you want the number of corrections the system has to make to be as small as possible, and you want there to be no information transmitted that is uncorrectable.Over the years, my cable provider has installed two different configurations. One was a 2-way splitter followed by a 3-way, and the other was a single 4-way splitter. Swapping splitters is easy; so, I decided to experiment to see which was better. My first attempt to correct the problem was a more expensive 2-way from a box store, one branch going to the cable modem and the other going to a 3-way splitter to feed the TVs. This was markedly better than the failing splitter in that correcteds dropped 2 or 3 decimal places, and non-correctables dropped to 0. The observable effect was that there were less (no?) interruptions during game play; so, this was an adequate solution. Also noteworthy was that I went cheap on the 3-way thinking that would be OK for the TVs; it was for 2 out of 3 cable boxes. The third box would not get a picture. So, I put the old 4-way where the 3-way was and all three cable boxes came online. The lesson is that even a failing, high-quality 4-way is better than a cheap 3-way. (Which was odd to me because the signal strength is divided by the number of splits, regardless of actual connections.)My second attempt was this splitter. What I can measure is that the correcteds have dropped to 1/100 of what they were in my first attempt, with, as expected, 0 uncorrectable octets. Not surprisingly, the internet and TV connectivity is rock solid. How to attribute the difference is the question. The cable modem was actually getting a stronger signal from the 2-way splitter than it is with this 4-way; so, signal strength is not the answer. Looking at the specs, the expensive 2-way splitter has 78 decibels of noise isolation and this one has 130. So, the difference appears to be the shielding or isolation from noise on the line; and more is much better than less.Addendum: Grounding the splitter, by running a wire from it to a copper water pipe, has reduced the number of correcteds to something less than 1 per billion. I'm not sure exactly because I've only tested with 1 GB of data, and there are 0 errors.

Stopped Picture from Going in and Out...Can Access On Demand Again!
I have Comcast Cable with 3 HD boxes. Two work flawlessly upstairs but the one in the game room was giving me issues. The picture kept on going in and out every 10-15min or so. I even began seeing error messages when attempting to access On Demand. I contacted Comcast, they reset the box for me multiple times, I unplugged it and plugged it back in, even switched HD boxes with a working one from upstairs. At the end of the call, they wanted to send a technician. I decided to figure out the issue myself because I don’t have that monthly cable coverage plan nor do I want to pay a one-time visit of $35 or whatever price it is.After reading online forums, I found out HDTVs/HD boxes, cable modems and satellite dishes should use a coaxial cable rated RG6 because it has better shielding (tripe or quad), better frequency and no interference compared to the older models like RG59. The cable in your house should say what type it is; RG6, RG59 or something else.I replaced my current cable in the game room with this one from Amazon by Mediabridge Coaxial Cable (25 Feet) with F-Male Connectors - Ultra Series by Mediabridge - Tri-Shielded UL CL2 In-Wall Rated RG6 Digital Audio / Video - Includes Removable EZ Grip Caps (Part# CJ25-6BF-N1 ) I also replaced Comcast’s black and gold splitter with this Extreme HD Digital high performance one because each connector was rated at -7DB and Comcast’s was -5DB and -3DB. Because of the inconsistent connector ratings, I believe this is where the issue was; my box wasn't getting enough juice from the splitter. Once the cable and splitter were upgraded, the error messages stopped, I could access On Demand, and I was able to watch my programs free of going in and out. You could probably just replace this splitter and not upgrade your cable if it isn’t old. I’m just happy I can watch TV free from distraction.

Solid Performance, Value-Priced.
Bought this to replace a "junk-quality" 3-way splitter installed by a satellite TV company to serve three rooms. Kissed the satellite goodbye a bit over 4 years ago, put in a Winegard rooftop antenna, and simply reused the existing splitter to distribute the antenna signal. Just added TV to a fourth room, hence the need for the Extreme 4-way reviewed here.Compared to the junk 3-way, the Extreme is massive. It has the look and feel of a quality piece of equipment. Naturally, you'd expect a signal strength loss to occur when an input is split four ways instead of three. Indeed, the junk 3-way claimed a -3.5 db per-output loss, while the 4-way Extreme claims -7 db. Those claims (and actual performance) notwithstanding, to this human's eyes and ears, there is no observable drop-off in picture or sound quality using the Extreme. Using each TV's signal strength menu option revealed that signal at the original three rooms remained just as strong as it had been before adding another split. You can pay a lot more for a splitter -- there's a Monster 4-way on Amazon presently selling for $37.63 vs. $7.25 for the Extreme. The Monster is rated at 2GHz vs. the Extreme's 1GHz. Does 2GHz (at 5X the price) result in a visible or audible difference? Three of my four rooms contain casual-viewing grade equipment. I can't imagine 2GHz making any discernible difference in those rooms. Antenna TV viewed through the Extreme splitter on the audiophile/videophile quality home theater setup in my main room is every bit as pleasing to the eyes and ears as the 1080P surround sound provided by Blu-Ray. For my application, the Extreme is the slam-dunk price/performance winner. Why pay more to chase specs if you're unlikely to see or hear any difference?
