Uh... maybe not.
The authors two amazingly written novels, including The Sympathizer, tempted us to buy this children's book. I regret to report that this jointly authored children's book (father and son) lacks the clever humor and psychological insight of the father's two preceding novels. Alas. Wait until your children are teenagers, and read them The Sympathizer aloud.

A DELIGHTFUL STORY WITH WONDERFUL ILLUSTRATIONS!
This delightful story and fascinating illustrations take me right back to my childhood where I raised chickens and played with them everyday. I re-discovered my childhood inside this very book.In CHICKEN OF THE SEA, a group of chickens give up their boring life, board a pirate ship, sail out to the vast sea to seek fortune only to discover exciting adventures. Serious and playful, poetic and hilarious, this book is a great read. I bought it as gifts for my nephews and nieces and it was so great to hear them laugh out loud as they enjoyed the book.Viet Thanh Nguyen and Thi Bui are my favorite authors. It is amazing that they collaborated with their children on this fun and meaningful project.

And the children (and chickens) shall lead!
No grandchildren of my own but I am planning to send as gifts for other kids in my life. The story is silly fun that children will adore. And can easily learn to read for themselves. But the underlying message is that the creative impulses of children matter. They are worthy of respect by the adults in their lives. This adult-assisted book is a great way to inspire the children in YOUR life to draw, to write, to dream. And, in the process, remind our serious adult selves that imagination is a powerful tool we need to unleash more often.

Nepotism on 100...unoriginal, boring book
Is your dad a Pulitzer Winner who can get an award winning illustrator?? Yes! Then YOU TOO can publish an awful children's book: unoriginal, boring, had no themes...parents' vanity publishing their of kid's awful drawings...SORRY, they got an award winning illustrator to make the kid's chicken scratch into barely edible chicken salad. My kid won't read this again.

The boys, aged 5 and 8, enjoyed!
Love that it was written by the young son of a great writer!!! Actually a very cute littlestory and lends itself to exaggerated read-aloud sessions
