Vera Series 10

Always entertaining!
I watched the whole series of Vera and loved it. It was refreshing to see an older celebrity acting so naturally. The character had many sides, some amusing, some a little irritating but overall funny, clever and believable.

Another solid offering of cases for doughty DCI Vera Stanhope to solve.
The Northumbria and City Police Force must be blessed by having DCI Vera Stanhope running their murder investigations as she seems to be able to work without any pressure from Senior Officers higher up the food chain to achieve results and neither do there appear to be any financial constraints affecting the ability of her team to function unlike all other Forces throughout the U.K.Series 10 consists of the usual four feature length cases which are entitled Blood Will Tell / Parent Not Expected / Dirty and The Escape Turn. Sally Abbott fresh from her BBC creation The Coroner (cancelled after only two series of ten episodes each amid some slight controversy concerning the perceived closeness of her lead character to one created in the books of M.R.Hall) joins the list of regular contributors. Whilst all the episodes are well constructed I think it is noticeable that throughout the life of Vera the strongest stories have been when books written by Ann Cleeves herself have been adapted for the small screen - The Seagull in Series 9 being the latest example. The Darkest Evening which comprises the next offering from the Author is not due for publication until September 2020 so hopefully this will feature in a future Series. Those of us who have enjoyed spending time with Vera down the years know exactly what to expect and Series 10 doesn't disappoint - all the familiar traits are in evidence. It never ceases to amaze me that Brenda Blethyn is able to introduce so many different inflexions when using the word "hm" ranging from pensive to downright disbelief when addressing other characters whether they be members of her own squad witnesses or suspects. I particularly enjoy the sometimes acerbic exchanges between Vera and the Pathologist Dr. Malcolm Donahue whether at the murder site or his lab. Also I do sometimes wonder what qualities her bagman DC Aiden Healy brings to the investigations as apart from providing his boss with an endless supply of surgical gloves and bootees whenever a fresh body is discovered he never appears to be taking any notes whilst interviews are taking place outside the confines of the Interview Room at the Police Station. He must have an excellent power of mental recall ! This is but a minor detail especially as the remaining officers involved are constantly providing Vera with updates of all the various bits of relevant information to assist the investigation in progressing to the point where Vera identifies the culprit who is then brought to justice.Another long-standing attraction of this Series since it's inception is the North East itself whether it be the rugged coastlines / City landscapes or wild moorlands. When I lived in there for nigh on twenty years back in the 1970's there was a saying "don't tell everyone how beautiful it is as otherwise they'll all want to come" and that remains just as true today despite whatever economic troubles the area has been subjected to at the hands of various Governments. As a passing thought just for once it would make a welcome change to see Vera deal with a case where the weather conditions comprise nigh on horizontal rain or there's six feet of snow on the ground instead of the almost perpetual blue skies that we are shown but maybe the powers that be prefer clement conditions for their bankable stars to operate under. To answer other queries raised about the running time I can confirm that Series 10 is approximately 356 mins long despite what Amazon continue to state in their particulars.Audio : English onlyAudio Description and Subtitles : English onlyThere are no Extras.

Excellent series again and quality television
There are some questions about the running time. I am not sure if they are made by ITV, but I think that the programmes were originally longer on television, but on DVD they do not contain the adverts, hence the discrepancy. Some of the stories are easier to follow than others - too many characters for my little brain - but overall the series delivers the same high quality. Vera herself is a wonderfully eccentric character, with a brilliant mind hidden beneath her dowdy attire, but I much prefer her to the coiffured botoxed teeth whitened detectives from across the pond. Perhaps the next series will include a " be nice to Kenny " episode.

Get a region free DVD player
We love Vera! I also enjoy the books. I have seen once in a while people complaining they can’t play the discs because of the region issue. You can purchase a region free DVD player on Amazon or if you can find a really cheap old school DVD player that has no computer that also will work. In Canada I got one at London Drug.I have both players because British dvds are cheaper from Amazon uk. I take the cheap one on vacation so I can borrow public library dvds.

Vera, Vera, how does your garden grow!
This is superb, Brenda bless her, is excellent as the boss-girl together with the rest of her staff, they create a great inferno of information that leads to a successful arrest. Each episode is actually different, they make mistakes but somehow comes the right response.

You need Close Caption
This is an amazing series. I have bought each season and we thoroughly enjoy each episode. I do highly recommend you use Close Caption to better understand what they are saying. They do use words that we do not use in the US like the word "bairns" which is children. The plots are very good. Even with some changes in the cast the series has remained very interesting. I highly recommend it for an excellent addition to ones British DVD library.
