Actor William Zabka finally comes into his own as iconic Johnny Lawrence in TV's Cobra Kai
As a teenager in 1984, I found the life-guidance that I didn’t know I needed in the big-screen story of Daniel LaRusso, a New Jersey boy who moves to LA, and gets into conflict over a girl with school alpha-male, and regional karate-champion, Johnny Lawrence.Daniel befriends Mr Miyagi, a Japanese war-veteran, who not only teaches Daniel that karate is for self-defence only, but also that Daniel’s true source of strength will always be his own self-belief. Their friendship became the father-son relationship that I craved but never found, and their story taught me that the secret of it all is to keep hoping beyond all hope. The story of The Karate Kid perfectly captures the conflict of the Reagan-era during the Cold War, showing young people how to find a pathway of balance through all the political rhetoric our elders were throwing at us at the time. Now, as a fifty-something in 2020, I’m finding the later-life guidance I need in the small-screen story of Johnny Lawrence and how he rebuilds his life by rebuilding the Cobra Kai dojo. This TV series perfectly captures the conflict of the Trump-era in a post-9/11 world, showing grown-ups how to find a pathway of balance instead of throwing political rhetoric at all the youngsters in our lives. But the real stroke of creative genius here isn’t in updating the story’s relevance. It’s in shifting the emotional focus of the story from Daniel to Johnny. Broken by the conditioning he received as a young man, Johnny’s out of touch with the world he finds himself in, but still determined to find his purpose again.Johnny is the real revelation in this extended universe, and actor William Zabka perfectly embodies Johnny’s burnt-out but still-committed character. In Cobra Kai, Zabka finally comes into his own - as an actor, as a star, and as a true on-screen inspiration. It’s hard now not to look back and see that every story has two sides. What also happened in 1984 is that Daniel LaRusso came out of nowhere, and not only took away Johnny’s girl, Ali Mills, but also Johnny’s karate title. Johnny wasn’t a bully. He was just a guy doing what he'd been taught to do to protect his own. It’s even harder now not to find myself agonising over whether Johnny will meet Ali again, and have another chance at finding the love he’s always deserved, but never found.Who would have guessed that now, after 36 years, the rivalry between Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso for the love of Ali Mills would still be inspiring me to keep hoping beyond all hope?

Great show.
This Youtube premium show was a big surprise ....I was 14 in 84 - I saw Karate Kid at some point, but it wasn't as big an impact on me that it was for others.Dosen't matter much, if you are a fan of the 80s or the original series, there is something in this show for you.It has an old vibe about it in some ways - reminicent of some classic shows of yesteryear - but it's brought forward and made fresh with it's own stories and has modern freshness about it as well.It has a nice amount of fan service - the story is super woven making for some pretty crazy dynamics in the story line. You'll probably wizz through this set as it's very moreish. The less you know about the show the better before watching imo ..It's set 35yrs after KK.Thats it - watch it.The production is great and viewing was a fun time.If that sounds good to you - just jump in and enjoy.2 Seasons, 2 Discs each. Each season is 10 X 26 min eppies.(Actually a couple of the eppies are just a bit longer.)So a nice chunk of viewing. As someone else said, no headband or slipcover like the USA initally got.Great picture imo and still cool to be able to get this as physical media.Theres a few extras on the final disc : Deleted scenes Gag reel etcOrdered mine from Zoom online and it came in 2 days in the Lockdown.8/10Thanks peeps!

For fans of the original Karate Kid
If you enjoyed the Original Karate Kid (1984) you should enjoy this. The story starts with Johnny Lawrence, whose life hasn't quite turned out as well as he had hoped and he's still stuck in the 80's, We find out what Daniel had been doing since we last saw him. Along with new characters (Sons, Daughters, their school friends), the cast from the first 3 movies make an apperance, even Mr Miyagi, although only in flashback from the movies as Noriyuki "Pat" Morita is sadly no longer with us - died November 2005, for which one of episode is dedicated to his memory. (Fun Fact, Miyagi's headstone lists his death as 2011) As yet, no sign of Julie-san (Hilary Swank) from the 4th movie. The Writer have been very respectfull of the movies that preceded, and have worked hard to tell a compelling story with the cast they have, without any of the PC nonsence that we see in too many movies and shows today. personally, I can't praise this series enough.

Excellent
The show is excellent. For fans, this continuation of the saga is done with a lot of love and respect for the past (including plenty of great easter egg nods and winks to iconic moments in the original films), but it's also updated and re-energised in an engaging way for audiences coming to it fresh. The cast is brilliant, the story is rich, complex, and rewarding - I really can't recommend it highly enough.A word or two on the UK DVD release - it's sadly a little disappointing. We get most of the special features from the US version: deleted scenes; docs on the fight choreography and characters, gag reel, stingray reel, making faces reel (outtakes and b-roll footage). But missing are: cast chemistry reads, and a couple of docs on the music, including a performance with William Zabka. Perhaps there were rights issues with porting over the music docs, but it's a shame to not have those included, and the cast chemistry reads being left out is also a real shame. The DVD is packaged in a simple Amaray case with no slip cover and no headband (both of which were included in the US version. The US limited edition DVD is now out of print and only obtainable at truly absurd prices, so at the moment this UK DVD is the cheapest way of owning one of the best TV series to be made in the last few years.
