Read the fine print
I purchased the Blue Ray version and it does not load on my player. Belatedly, I see the disclaimer that it does, indeed, not load on USA players.

A good old fashioned epic love story
They don't make 'em like this anymore, and I'm really disappointed by that. It took a French company to bring to us the genesis of the Vietnam War when it was still a civil conflict of the natives raging against their French colonizers., and how the two cultures meshed and eventually split with personal consequences for those caught in the middle of the strife.Vietnam, or French-Indochina as it was officially referred to by Western powers, is a beautiful and exotic place, and was still under communist dominated economics when the French crew went and shot this movie. But regardless of the obstacles the production team were able to showcase a location and people for a very intriguing story. It has a dashing young hero, a beautiful older woman, her young adopted daughter who is naïve, it has criminal intrigue, a little sex (depicted in PG fashion), a few gun fights, and is really exceptionally well shot and well scripted. That, and the bluray transfer isn't half bad. If you have the DVD, then I'm hard pressed to recommend the bluray, but you will see more detail than the initial DVD transfer. How important that is to a film like this is essentially up to the viewer. But you can't go wrong by spending a few extra dollars on this edition. The only down side is that it's the European edition of the film. And where there are English subtitles (or so I recall), you have to spend a few extra dollars than you normally would for a an American or UK version of the disk.Still, it's a very finely crafted film that is both huge in scope and intimate in story. Check it out.

Top 5 Deneuve Movies
I love this film. It has a special place in my heart because it's the first film I'd ever watched with Catherine Deneuve in it at the cinema (when I cut class to sneak into the theatre midday) and she blew me away. The chemistry between her and Vincent Perez is palpable and sizzles onscreen, a beautiful couple, indeed. All the actors do a tremendous job to contribute to this Oscar-winning film, but the only unrealistic bit (*spoilers*) is anyone leaving Catherine Deneuve for another woman. :) She is at her most beautiful in this film and tears one's heart apart with her acting. No wonder she was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for this film. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this film so much! I didn't realise it was French with English subtitles it did initially put me off but I needn't have worried! The production isn't the best ever however the storyline keeps you entranced with the romance and sadness. This is a must see film.

'Region 2/B' Blu-ray film was appreciated complement to existing North America DVD already owned. A well-made fictional film dating to Colonial French occupation of Vietnam, starring French actress Catherine Deneuve, though this disc requires either European-made or customized 'multi-region' Blu-ray player to watch.
