This Menispermaceae was described by William Grant Craib in 1922. It's from Thailand, where it grows in peat with some water and not too much sun. The flowers very small and yellow. The caudex can grow to ten centimetres in diameter, the vines reach for 50 centimetres or more. One species, S. tetrandra, is among the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is called han fang ji (漢防己, "Chinese fang ji").
