My kids love Dempsey's books
Kristy Dempsey's books are all very different but great for preschoolers and parents alike. The zooming cars in Mini-Racer are reminisicent of Richard Scarry books, but with a modern twist.Very fun read-aloud!

Engaging for the Car Obsessed Toddler
We got this book out of the library, and my 2yo has been obsessed with it since--we've had to check it out two more times. Obviously, it was time to get our own copy. Mini Racer has beautiful full-page illustrations of a motley crew of animals, who are all going for a race; a bulldog on a motorcycle, a monkey in a banana car, alligators in a low-rider hotrod, bunnies in a carrot car, a seal in a wheel chair, cats on a bicycle, etc. The text is rhyming, well-written and humorous, neither too simplistic nor too difficult for a toddler. Each opening has a different stage of the race, from a pitstop to a snack break; various mishaps happen along the way (the cats get stuck on a post, the dogs drive into the river, a bear gets a bump on his head). Lots to discuss and to keep a toddler's interest for many re-readings, without being so complex that a toddler would give up halfway. The illustrations are reminiscent of Richard Scarry, so they have a familiarity to parents and kids who are fans of his many books as well. This book is definitely worth getting and keeping.

Perfect choice for your little car lover
Mini Racer is one of those books that you just know is going to get read and re-read and re-read again until the cover is all stained and the pages fall out. Little ones with a fondness for all things that go will be absolutely delighted with these double page spreads that feature all kinds of vehicles racing up hills, down hills, under bridges and even stopping for a pit stop! There are monkeys driving banana cars, Dalmations driving spotted race cars, and a pair of rabbits driving a carrot. Can you spot the mini racer on each page? He's a snail on a skateboard, which is just too funny... There are wrecks and lead changes galore, so kids will want to spend lots of time with these pictures. The text flows nicely and the rhyming is seamless, making this also a natural choice for story time. This is a great high energy book that will be wonderful for any child ages 2-5. Recommended.

Great rhyming picture book (especially for Richard Scarry fans)!
It's race time in this picture book reminiscent of Richard Scarry's books from my childhood! Cute rhyming text is nice and short, leaving plenty for the fun illustrations to fill in. "Swerving, sliding, hit the brakes; fender bender, bumps and aches." Luckily, there's an ambulance and a paramedic frog on the scene to help the teddy bear with the bump on her head. There's lots of shenanigans and cheering galore when little snail wins the race!

cute pictures
Cute picture but no real story just captions. I read the book to my three year-old asked him if he enjoyed it, his response was 'no that was rubbish'. My toddler did not like it at all and the illustrations did not amuse him either. Shame I thought the pictures were cute. I think my toddler found the illustrations too busy.
