The Art of NASA: The Illustrations That Sold the Missions

Excellent Book Of American Spaceflight Illustrations
This is a large coffee table sized book of drawings, paintings, technical illustrations and CG illustrations of American spaceflight from the Mercury program right up to the International Space Station and future missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Almost all the illustrations focus on the hardware and spacecraft.Although the book is called the "Art Of NASA," it's not exclusively illustrations commissioned by NASA itself or their many contractors. There's paintings and illustrations done by artists working outside the space program such as over half a dozen monochrome illustrations included here done by Russell Arasmith, who did numerous illustrations of especially key elements of various Apollo missions for the LA Times. The overall theme of the book is the effort to depict and "sell" the manned space effort to the public before and as it was unfolding. Thus you won't get paintings done long after the fact from noted illustrators like Alan Bean. All the images are very well reproduced in this book, most taking up an entire page. The wide range of artistic styles balanced with focusing on key elements of each major program (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Shuttle, ISS, etc) make for a well balanced and nicely curated selection of images depicting the US space program from start to what may lay ahead in the future. If you or someone you're considering gifting this book to is even a casual fan of manned spaceflight and the visual appeal of the missions and spacecraft, this book comes highly recommended.

Absolutely Stunning!
I just received my copy of the Collector's Edition and I am absolutely amazed. The quality of this book far exceeds anything I've encountered. While I only had time this afternoon to briefly review the book, eagerly flipping page after page and catching my breath at the beauty of the images, I know that I will return to this and slowly savor every piece of art in this book!

Amazing and Rare NASA Artwork and More!
This book, like so many Piers Bizony editions, is an excellent full color treasury of exceptionally rare and complex illustrations that explained and sold the space program to the American people. But there’s much more inside. Future technologies are included, as well as paintings from Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and current images inspired by the Artemis missions. This would be a fantastic gift for a space program fan, the history buff and the aspiring artist as well as seasoned professional illustrators.

Elegant and Beautiful
Superb materials, numerous pieces of beautiful space art from a wide variety of artists, and lots of good explanatory text. I really liked seeing some of the futurist paintings from the 1930s, and 50s thru 70s. Fun stuff. This is a great book---buy it with confidence that you are getting your money's worth.

STUNNING!
For most Space Historians, Collectors and Fans, this publication, The Art of NASA: The Illustrations That Sold the Missions will not provide any, formally unseen Artist Conceptions Art, however the artwork is presented in a way that makes you want to turn the page and see what’s next. In my opinion, this a MUST HAVE, in your Space Library.

PROOFREAD!
The art is gorgeous, but I am so glad I got the Kindle version due to the bizarre failures at proofreading to be found in this book. Had I spent the amount for the physical copy, such mistakes would be unforgivable. There are a few cases where there isn’t space between one word and the next, but that’s not a dealbreaker. It happens all the time. What was so frustrating was that every single point where the letter set “ft” were supposed to be there was a blank spot. How does that happen?
