Sakura Wars for PlayStation 4 is an action-adventure game that combines dynamic character interactions with thrilling combat set in a beautifully animated 1940s steampunk Tokyo. Players assume the role of Captain Seijuro Kamiyama, tasked with revitalizing the Flower Division of the Imperial Combat Revue while battling demonic threats and forging deep relationships with a colorful cast.

An Anime JRPG
This is my first Sakura Wars game, so I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, but thankfully, Sakura Wars is very enjoyable! Without spoilers- you play the role of Seijuro Kamiyama, a former Navy ship commander turned captain of the new Flower Division. Based out of a theater, the Flower Division is made up of woman who are not very talented but with Seijuro's help, can become real stars. The main Flower Division gals are Sakura Amamiya, Hatsuho Shinonome, Azami Mochizuki, Anastasia Palma, and Clarisse. Each girl is unique and enjoyable, plus there is a feature where you can build trust with them for multiple positive effects. The game has very serious moments, but is also filled with very silly interactions that made me laugh quite a few times.Game play- You travel multiple areas interacting with your friends to build their trust and complete side missions or conversations. Building trust will allow your teammates to be more combat effective and even open the door to romance. You have multiple responses to choose from in conversations, so it is kinda like persona, but not quite as deep. When not doing the social interactions at the main base, you are either fighting demons or other mechs. The combat is fun but not to complicated at all. You press circle and triangle to do basic combos, and square to do your special attacks. Enemies are easy to beat and each time a new one is presented, the characters explain how to defeat them. This is not a platinum style combat game, but it still flows good and is fun to play.Visuals and Sound- the game is very anime style with anime cut scenes. It is very well done and I personally loved the visuals. Character models are unique and each of the main characters stand out. The mechs and battle effects look great as well. The music is OK, with many Japanese songs playing during cut scenes and boss battles. None of the music really stood out to me and either really good or bad.Overall, Sakura Wars is a fun game for those who enjoy social interactions with comrades, mech battles, romance, silliness, and anime.

A reboot of a classic series.
I was fortunate enough to experience the first Sakura Wars on the Sega Saturn. Little did I or most other gamers of that time know, that the game would become a series and that series continued. The only hint that there was more was in the classic animated series. Years passed and Sakura Wars made it's way back to America in the form of a PS2 and Wii game. It wasn't heavily advertised so I sadly missed it. In 2019 I was messing around with my Asian PS4 account, and found a demo for Sakura Wars on the Asian PlayStation store. At first I thought it was a remaster until I played it and found it was an all new game! I waited patiently hoping for an American release, with tons of doubt. Good news! Sakura Wars was released in North America in April 2020. Since 2020 was an incredibly bad year, I didn't get it until December.Sakura, the main character in Sakura Wars, is not Sakura from the original Sakura Wars. From the opening scene you find that 10 years had passed, and Sakura had saved Sakura from a demon attack, when Sakura was a little girl underneath the Sakura tree. Sakura decided that she wanted to be just like Sakura, and joined the Imperial Combat Review. In the present, all the original members except one, are presumed dead. It's up to you and Sakura, to reform the Imperial Combat Review, fight some bad guys, learn more about Sakura, her friends and maybe just a little bit about what happened to the original Sakura. Confused? Believe me, it all makes sense. The gameplay has 3 main types: First is the visual novel point and click adventure, the second is RPG style exploration, and the third is action RPG combat. Honestly it doesn't use any of these to their fullest potential, but what it does use is pretty good, and what it lacks it more than makes up for in story. The game is visually stunning combining anime with 3D models and regular video game cutscenes. These aren't seamless transitions but the different styles are a delight and reminiscent of how games like this used to be made a generation or 3 ago.The sound, music and visuals alone are worth the price of this game. My only complaint is the story gets a bit long in places and Sakura gets a little annoying with her self doubts, late in the story. It almost becomes unecessary drama. There are minor multiple ending paths as you get to choose who will be best girl, as well as a mini card game and a new game plus mode, making the game worth replaying. Sakura Wars isn't perfect, but hopefully Sega makes a sequel and improves the game with each new release. I give it a 9 out of 10 because I am terribly biased and suffer from Sakura Wars nostalgia.

The media could not be loaded.
