The Monocle Book of Japan

Probably the best gift volume about Japan
Stunning book!Of so many things I adored about this country, struggling to document my experiences and share them with friends/family is the main struggle (photos must be of a professional quality, right?) - this is a fantastic volume that somehow manages to cover best of the best with Japanese-like attention to details.Amazing quality of the print and Monocle aesthetic of short descriptions and peculiar objects - I am keeping this book for myself and a few of my friends are now getting this as a gift.Great design, high quality of the print, photos and stories - just perfect. And yes, this is a heavy and large book - coffee table or library, it is a must.(The volume about Italy has been announced. Can’t wait!)

Rather lightweight content
I look to Monocle as an upper end publication for people that like to think and analyse, this book does not reflect that ethos. Having visited Japan, the content seems superficial and brief plus many of the pictures are not particularly well reproduced. This volume does seem consistent with the quality of Monocle Magazine and there are more atrtractive "coffee table" volumes around.
